Show WedThursFri, February 25-27, 2004 The Park Record C-3 Ailey II By CASEY R. BASDEN Of the Record staff It would be virtually impossible to not have liked Friday night's Ailey II performance. The only thing that could be considered disappointing dis-appointing is if one could not attend Saturday night's performance as well. The modern dance troupe, composed com-posed of 12 young dancers striving for professional status, could not have showcased their talent any better. bet-ter. Pieces such as "The Tyner Project," "Divining," "The Hunt" and the group's signature piece, "Revelations" were among the dances pertormed. Although each of the choreographed choreo-graphed routines was interpreted impeccably, two stood out from the rest - one with its strength, resilience and ritualistic feel, and the other with its spirituality, soul, rhythm and beauty. "The Hunt," choreographed by Robert Battle, a graduate of the New World School of the Arts, was performed Ailey II members Kirven J. Boyd, Robert Halley, . Zach L. Ingram, Chris Jackson, Willy Laury and Leyland Simmons. These six men, composing half of the ensemble, demonstrated a remarkable feat of strength as they danced to the music of Les Tambours du Bronx. Dressed in black full-length wrap-around skirts with red lining, each reflected what could only be described as a ritualistic ritualis-tic piece. The hard-hitting, fast-paced rhythmic sound drew the audience in as the men displayed high-energy bounding across the stage with moves reminiscent of tribal or dance, "Revelations," on the other hand, took an entirely different approach. This piece was choreographed choreo-graphed by the late Alvin Ailey in 1960 and set to what sounded like old Afro-American hymns. The lights, setting and decor were all done to perfection. Perhaps the best accompaniment was the costumes which reflected the mood of the piece and highlighting the dancers rather than distracting from them. The signature piece is broken into three sections - "Pilgrim of Sorrow," "Take Me to the Water" and "Move, Members, Move." Audiences seemed stirred most by the latter with an amazing rendition set to the music of "Rocka My Soul." A full company performed at this stage of the piece offering audiences Starstream r-o r t h wee ARIES (March 20 - April 19) Feeling a bit spaced out? With three celestial placements in your house of the unconscious, it,s no wonder. Look both ways before you cross the street or your Mom will have to hold your hand. In spite of being dazed & confused, you still manage to charm everyone from the traffic court judge to your annoyed sweetie thanks to Persuasive Venus in your sign. You get a lucky hunch on Wednesday, but whether you can stop daydreaming day-dreaming long enough to do something some-thing with it well, that's quite another story. A celestial gath-ering gath-ering in your house of the occult kicks it "m 'jr " ' Ailey II members Chris Jackson troupe which visited Park City's a glimpse not only into the work of famed choreographer Alvin Ailey, but into the spiritual prowess that music and dance often reflect. One of the most interesting things is how versatile this particular troupe is. Their repertoire is not limited to the art of modern dance. It is evident that students are trained in other aspect of dance including ballet - possibly even ballroom ball-room and jazz. Artistic Director Sylvia Waters personally selected all twelve of these dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's school. These individuals demonstrated great promise in their craft and were therefore chosen to work with the company. Throughout the production, their skill and versatility is demonstrated demon-strated as they interpret vastly different dif-ferent works ranging in theme. Their strength and skill is evident only solidifying their talent as pros- k of feb brings up an interest in developing your psychic abilities. (Oh, good. This time it's you who may be receiving "constructive" "con-structive" criticism instead of dishing dish-ing it out. Meanwhile, with your logical ruler (Mercury) in the illogical illogi-cal sign of Pisces, you can forget about impressing people with your common-sense intellect. You are, however, blessed with good intuition, intu-ition, extra sensitivity, & a busy imagination. Your boss may not appreciate this, but your sweetie does.
