Show SatSunMonTues, February 7-10, 2004 The Park Record Obituary Billy Gene Huhnke Jr., 1955 - 2004 Bill Huhnke, age 48, died at University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, following a heart attack. Bill was born Sept. 23, 1955, in Worland, Wyo. to Billy Gene Huhnke, Sr. and Sharon Lee. He attended school in Worland where he, discovered a love and gift for music through the encouragement of his mother and the guidance of his band director, Mr. Schueller. Bill went on to earn a bachelor s degree in music education at the University of Wyoming and a master's mas-ter's degree in music at the University of Utah. On Dec. 21, 1991 he was united in marriage to Lorel Preston in Park City. Bill did not just pass through this life, but left it better than he found it. His special talent for relating to young people influenced literally thousands of students in grades five through 12 over his 22-year career in the Park City School District. Beginning with approximately 13 students back in 1982. Bill's dedication dedica-tion to teaching, his passion for music and his spirited sense of humor expanded the program to include hundreds of young people. . His work with students in symphonic symphon-ic bands and jazz bands earned his performing groups numerous top honors and awards in both region and state competitions. With their high caliber and outstanding soloists, Bill's bands were often invited to perform at special events o Q Bill Huhnke throughout tiie Park City communi-' ty. Some of his groups have also performed per-formed out of state and in Europe. Bill leaves a legacy through his students stu-dents that will carry on for many years. Though Bill was recognized for his accomplishments with the work he did with the high school bands, he also had a special place in his heart for the young students in his elementary and middle school program. pro-gram. It was not uncommon to see young audience members dancinu to the beat of his students' music during these concerts. con-certs. Bill's sense of humor also shined through at these and other concerts as he joked and bantered back and forth with his colleague and dear friend, Jim Santy. Bill was also recognized for his efforts in the wider school and Park City community. He supported many students outside the band classroom through his attendance at their sporting and drama events. He also encouraged students to pursue educational scholarships beyond high school to help them reach their educational goals. Bill's work with the development of the Eccles Center was also important in his endeavors for students. As a member mem-ber of the Park City Community Church, Bill shared his music through his own trumpet playing. Beyond his love of music and teaching. Bill loved his four children: chil-dren: Spencer David, 20. and Stephen Carl. 18, from a previous marriage to Michcle Bluemel; and Jessika Mari, 11. and Nikolas Thomas, eight, from his marriage to Lorel. Bill cherished each of his children chil-dren and treasured the time he spent with them. He enjoyed the uniqueness of each of his children and strived to let them know that they were the loves of his life. Bill is survived by three sons: Spencer, Stephen and Nikolas; daughter. Jessika; wife. Lorel; mother moth-er and her husband, Sharon and Joe Fech; father. Billy Sr.; brother and Third Dist. Judicial Commission meets The Third District Judicial Nominating Commission will meet,' to nominate candidates for a judicial judi-cial vacancy in Third District Court The vacancy is a result of Judje Michael K. Burton's retirement effective June 2004. The meeting will take place ?eb. 11, 1:15 p.m. at the Administrative Office of the Courts, Scot M. Matheson Courthouse, 450 South State, Room N31. The Judicial Nominating Commission will accept public comments about issues facing Utah's Judicial System as well as suggested improvements during the first part of the meeting. The commission com-mission will not take testimony on individual applicants. Those interested in appearing before the commission must contact con-tact the Administrative Office of the Courts at (801) 578-3800 to make an appointment. Following the public comment period, the meeting will be closed in order for commission members to select a minimum of five candidates whose names will then be forwarded forward-ed to Governor Olene Walker. Funeral services for Bill Huhnke will be held at 3 p.m.. Monday. Feb. 9. at Park City Community Church, 4501 N. Highway 224. Pastor Bob Kaylor will officiate. Burial will be at the Park City Cemetery. Relatives and friends are welcome at the Olpin Mortuary, 288 N. Main Street in Heber, on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations dona-tions may be made to the Bill G. Huhnke Scholarship Fund.
