MERBACK Of the Record staff Directly across from the main ofQce at Park City High School is a room dedicated specifically to helping help-ing students find the money they need to go to college after graduation. gradua-tion. Behind her desk stacked with applications, scholarship counselor Dana Ardovino is brimming over . with exciting ideas to make dreams become realities. "This is the best job ever," said Ardovino. Ardovino came to PCHS near the end of the last school year and has been busy ever since, looking for funding sources in the communi-; ty and on the Internet and meeting with all the senior English classes to discuss scholarships. She starts early, meeting also with freshman computer technology classes to assist the students with their resume building. "I've met with 130 students, 33 parents and have 20 more sched-, sched-, uled," she said. Having created a specific process, Ardovino begins her student stu-dent sessions by asking them to register reg-ister on Fast Web - the largest financial finan-cial aid site on the Internet. "I'm working to get every junior registered on Fast Web before the end of the year," said Ardovino. Registration includes creating a customized profile with information such as GPA, career objective, heritagenationality her-itagenationality and college preference. prefer-ence. Once a profile is in place, the account can be used throughout the rest of the school year and potential scholarships are sent to a designated e-mail address. Ardovino says students stu-dents can get information about anywhere from 30 to 140 scholarships, scholar-ships, with two to four-week deadlines, dead-lines, in their accounts on a weekly basis. Other useful sites include utah-mentor.com utah-mentor.com and college.net.com. On utahmcntor.com, a single word such as "firefighter" will bring up a list of possible scholarships with links to the applications. After they have registered, Ardovino says it's the students' job to pursue the scholarships. "It's up to them to get the application appli-cation and apply," she said. In honor of her 40th birthday, Ardovino is asking each student to apply for 40 scholarships, create a folder system with monthly goals and dedicate one hour a week to searching for and applying to scholarships. schol-arships. PCHS senior Rachel Dillin says that hour is easy, especially if you reuse and adapt an essay written writ-ten for one application. "Time flies when you work on it at home," she said. Since she began an internship with the Park City Fire Department, Dillon hopes to study ' firefighting, paramedics or emergency emer-gency nursing and maybe become a flight nurse. She has already applied for a few scholarships, including one sponsored by the American Fire Sprinkler Association, and is working work-ing on finding more. Dillin says the search effort is worth the experience. experi-ence. "Even if I cant apply to a scholarship schol-arship I've found, I know I can keep it for next year," she said. Ardovino continually reminds students of what they need to do to prepare for college with announcements announce-ments on the Miner Morning Show and a list of scholarships in the PCHS newsletter each month. One of her goals is to encourage students to get involved at a young age, by joining clubs, completing an internship intern-ship and helping out in the community. commu-nity. "Many colleges want to see if you're doing community service. Students should be thinking about it now. It s what sets them apart." she said. She adds that providing leadership leader-ship experience on an application stumps many students. "Leadership can be coaching a little league team, tutoring or working work-ing as a camp counselor," said Ardovino. Ardovino also helps students with their applications, looking over their essays and providing pointers. She keeps her students in mind when she sees a scholarship that might interest them and notifies them of possibilities. "If I see anything, I pass it along. I love these kids. They are unbelievable unbeliev-able overachievers and I would like to find scholarships for all of them," she said. PCHS Principal Hal Smith says that Ardovino's energy level and enthusiasm have had a positive effect on the students. , "Dana is wonderful. She is definitely defi-nitely helping students. She gives them all sorts of sources to look for scholarships. She is doing a fantastic job," he said. Ardovino's part-time position is funded by the Park City Education Foundation and one of her roles is to head up the local scholarship drive to benefit this year's seniors. Last year, the community scholarship scholar-ship program raised over $37,000 and Ardovino has verbal commitments commit-ments of $32,200 so far. "I have a wish list of scholarships - religious studies, in the name of a loved one or friend and endowments," endow-ments," she said. ' Another goal is to nominate students stu-dents for specific awards, such as the Burger King Scholars Award. ."I feel passionately that any recognition for the students and their efforts and talents gives them hope that they can achieve their dreams," she said To contribute to the scholarship fund or leant more about available scholarships, contact Dana Ardovino at 645-5650 or dardovi-noparkcity.kl2.ut.us. run w Remember our Name.
