Show WedThursFri, December 10-12, 2003 The Park Record B-5 Park City rallies to drop Dixie Miners come back to down Flyers 66-65 By BRETT LARSEN Of the Record staff With less than a second to play in a tie game, Krista Berry calmly stepped to the line and knocked down one of two free throws, lifting lift-ing the Park City girls' basketball team to a 66-65 win oyer Dixie and its first win of the season Friday night. Her shot also marked the completion com-pletion of an amazing, second-half turnaround that saw the Miners rally from a huge halftime deficit on their own court. "We were focusing more on defense, and kind of forgot about offense a little bit," Park City coach Steve Crandall said about a nightmarish second quarter, in which the Miners scored only seven points while digging themselves them-selves in a 14-point hole at the half. During the break, Crandall said he made a promise to his players: If they narrowed the Flyers' lead to less than 10 by the end of the third quarter, they ;Would win. j "I just know these girls," he said. "They believed they could, and they did." After Dixie added a couple more baskets right out of the locker lock-er room. Park City suddenly roared to life, especially senior forward J.D. Harris, who scored all of her 17 points in the second half. In the streak, Harris rained five three-pointers on the Flyers. "She was just taking the shots," Crandall said. In the first half, all his players but Berry had been somewhat timid with the ball, he said. They were completely the opposite in the second, he added. Berry, who shot the ball well in both halves, led Park City with 20 points. Point guard Nicole Tomlin added 12 points of her own, but it was her 13 assists that really stood out, Crandall said. "All she had to do was give them the ball," he said. With her teammates playing aggressively, Tomlin found plenty of willing receivers, he said. More pleasing to the coach was the dramatic drop in turnovers 'committed by the team. The biggest area for improvement improve-ment that Crandall saw with his team, besides allowing itself to get down by such a big margin, was stopping opponents' post players. "We've had a big problem defending big post players," he said. "We aren't quite getting the rotation there yet." In the first three, games, the Miners have given up a pile of points in the paint. Carbon center Megan Warburton stung Park first half. At the break, the Miners devised a new plan to deal with her. "We didn't do a very good job on her in the first half. She's a very good post player," Crandall said. But in watching Bromely early on, Crandall said he noticed that she tried to block every shot that came near her. By sending his players straight at her. they would force her to commit some fouls as she contested their shots, he said. The strategy worked. The Miners drove the ball relentlessly in the paint, and before long. Bromely had picked up enough fouls to not be much of a factor while the home team staged its comeback. After Park City fought back to take a two-point lead with less than a minute to play, Dixie tied the score with a pair of free throws, setting the stage for Lehi's Michelle Harris'dh hard 25 aili-: -'-1 When trie shriotrn'guarcH-liit week ago. If not for his instruction, Crandall said he was sure Berry would've hit both shots. "The way she was shooting, she was making everything." he said. Park City (1-2) now prepares to face 4A foe American Fork at a tournament held at Bear River High School this week. Hie Miners have played the Cavemen three times, with Park City winning two of the meetings. American Fork won the last one, however, during summer training this year. "They're formidable, but if we play like we did the other night, we'll be hard to beat for anybody," any-body," Crandall said Monday. Tip off against American Fork is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bear River. Win or lose, the Miners will have games on Friday and Saturday as well, with times to be announced. - Bear River High is located at 1450 S. Main in Garland.
