The black-and-white cover photo, taken during Burhenne's late 1960s travels in the Sierra Nevada, showed two men standing in the snow in front of a Sierra peak. Dostie pointed to the unusual skis stuck in the snow beside the men. "He's already onto it super fat skis," he said. Super fat skis, the tool of back-country back-country skiers, have been around longer than most people know, but only recently have they begun- to earn widespread popularity in the ski world. Dostie 's magazine, Couloir, may be part of the reason. The magazine, now in its 15th year, predates the modern freeski-ing freeski-ing revolution by at least a decade. Only one other magazine, the 10-year-old "Backcountry," covers strictly backcountry skiing and snowboarding. "There isn't a magazine out there that doesnl dabble in the backcountry, and we do it all the time," Dostie said. Couloir magazine began in 1988 as a newsletter called "Le Chronicle du Couloir." Dostie, then an engineer in Los Angeles, wrote the stories with a basic word processor, printed them on 8-by-12-inch paper and taped pictures to it. He mailed out stapled sta-pled photocopies for free. Recipients gave money when asked for help with mailing costs. Gear makers, adventure outfitters and resorts took out ads when he began using a computer design program to improve the newsletters newslet-ters look. He soon had a 16-page glossy magazine with gear reviews, photos pho-tos and articles from other back-country back-country skiers. He quit his job, moved to Truckee and worked 80-hour 80-hour weeks to put the magazine out, editing, designing and handling han-dling the business largely on his own.
