A 19-year-old of maturity and elegance, Cohen flew through her opening triple lutz-double toe loop jump, landing softly and then moving mov-ing right into a triple flip at high speed. The American also displayed her trademark flexibility with spellbinding spirals, forward and backward, in which she extended her leg 180-degrees in the air. Afterward, she credited her smooth performance with' having learned to deal with the pressures of competition. "I felt good out there, and I'm really learning how to compete well," Cohen said. "I can count on myself." Facing a field of unpolished women competitors, Cohen is almost guaranteed the gold when the event concludes with the long program on Saturday. Her closest rivals are Shizuka Arakawa of Japan and Julia Sebestyen of Hungary. Neither Arakawa nor Sebestyen has made a significant mark on the international skating circuit, but both skated admirably Friday. Arakawa came in second and Sebestyen was third. In the men's event, reigning world champion Evgeni Plushenko won the short program despite skating without his usual flamboy ance and nearly crashing to the ice on a jump. Plushenko is a great overall skater, but his routine on Friday was flat he put his hand down to keep from hitting the ice after a quadruple toe loop jump, and his spins and footwork looked labored. American champion Michael Weiss, whose has been haunted by inconsistency, performed without a fall or major fumble. But he skated too conservatively, forsaking a planned quadruple-triple jump combination for a triple-triple instead. The strategy hurt him. Weiss had been a favorite in the event,' but he finished third behind newcomer new-comer Daisuke Takahashi of Japan, a high-school student whose inspiring performance included an effortless triple flip-triple flip-triple toe loop jump combination. Frenchman Brian Joubert who has an impressive repertory of technical skills fell on a standard triple axel and likely wont be a threat to Plushenko or Takahashi. The Grand Prix figure skating series has a new judging format this year. The series uses a new", anonymous, computer-based judging judg-ing system the International Skating Union developed in the wake of the Salt Lake City Olympics scandal. That system replaced the traditional tradi-tional 6.0 scale, awarding skaters points for technical execution and artistic merit. Rodriguez wins at World Cup speedskating ERFURT, Germany (AP) -Jennifer Rodriguez of the United States won her second straight 1,500-meter race in World Cup speedskating Saturday, comfortably comfort-ably beating Olympic champion Annie Friesinger. Bob de Jong also made it 2-for-2, leading a Dutch sweep in the men's 10,000. The top American was KC Boutiette in sixth place. Rodriguez finished in 1 minute, 57.86 seconds and missed Friesinger's course record by 0.13 seconds. The German was second, 0.79 seconds behind. Renate Groenewold of the Netherlands was third. Rodriguez, the bronze medalist at the Salt Lake City Olympics, also won the 1,500 at the World Cup opener last weekend in, Hamar, Norway. She leads the standings with 200 points, 40 ahead of Friesinger. Friesinger, who was second both times, was skating with a strained calf. Groenewold is third with 170 points, after also finishing third in Hamar. Among the men, De Jong was timed in 13:17.63 after winning the 5,000 last weekend. Jochem Uytdehaage was 3.04 seconds behind, followed by Carl Verheijen. De Jong leads the standings with 200 points, ahead of Verheijen (150) and Uytdehaage (125). U.S. women gain Olympic volleyball spot OSAKA, Japan (AP) - The U.S. women's volleyball team won a spot in the Olympics by finishing third in the World Cup following a victory over Cuba on Saturday. The United States rebounded from a loss to Brazil the previous day and assured itself a berth in Athens along with the unbeaten Chinese and Brazilians. "We were up and down the whole tournament," U.S. coach Toshiaki Yoshida said. "We al) knew we had to play well this afternoon and the players really came through." Tayyiba Haneef had 13 points and Prikeba Phipps added 11 in the 25-23, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 victory over Cuba, the Olympic gold medalist. The Americans (8-3) also lost to China and Poland in the 12-nation event. "After losing 3-0 to Brazil yester day, we were very disappointed," Phipps said. "It's been a tough tournament tour-nament for us and I'm glad it's finally final-ly over." The Americans had to wait for Italy's match against Brazil to determine if they would finish third. Italy needed to win in straight sets but dropped the opening set in a four-set loss to Brazil (10-1). The victory by the U.S. women dashed the hopes of host Japan, which lost to China (11-0). "The Americans were very strong," Cuban coach Blet Luis Calderon said. "We were fine physically but we couldn't match them in terms of mental toughness tough-ness and concentration." Other winners were Turkey, the Dominican Republic and Poland. m trull... ROT PS I TO! ! " -9 ' V I fefV'v I ' I. i 11 , , -wr -4vjt.
