' ' In Park City middle schools, the clubs hope to find their own place By JENNIFER R. MERBACK Of the Record staff Mingling with city officials and community com-munity members. Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake staff hoped to discover dis-cover their place in the Park City area at a clubs-hosted cocktail party at Park Meadows Country Club last week. "The whole point of the event was to get collaboration from the city's decision makers on how they best see our fit in the area," Kris Severson, Director of Marketing and Special Events for Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake. The reason for finding their place is that the clubs are looking for a home of their own in Park City. In place at Ecker Hill and Treasure Mountain middle schools for a year and a half, the clubs "offer diverse programs created to educate, edu-cate, entertain and inspire children," according to clubs literature. Students who participate in the clubs receive homework help, in addition to participating partici-pating in arts and crafts activities, sports and games, computer education, lield trips and service projects. "We help over 100 kids in the area by providing youth development, leadership leader-ship and life skills," said Executive Director Jim Jensen. Assistant Director of Operations Laurel Wilkinson is amazed with the level of participation in the "Power Hour" after-school club at both middle schools. "We've done better than we anticipated. anticipat-ed. The number of kids just keeps growing grow-ing and growing," said Wilkinson. - The clubs have 28-30 students enrolled at Treasure Mountain and 26-28 at Ecker Hill. Wilkinson adds that the teachers make it easy for clubs staff by providing homework information. "The schools feel that the clubs are part of the education system and make sure that space is available for us," said Wilkinson. Severson also notes that the school counselors work to identify kids that would benefit from the clubs. "We work hand-in-hand with the schools and have full-circle communication communica-tion with the teachers and counselors," said Severson. - . t i With the success of the clubs in the Hit 1 U (4 f .... k 4. f Q I O SCOTT SINEPARK RECORD From left: Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake Executive Director Jim Jensen, board member David DiCesaris and Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds mingle at clubs-hosted cocktail party at Park Meadows Country Club. school, Severson says that community leaders see the benefit and are receptive own.
