Who was St. Valentine? Valentine's Day is the second-largest greeting greet-ing card holiday of the year. Number one is Christmas. Many countries celebrate this holiday holi-day - the United States, England, France, Mexico and Australia. But who was the person responsible for such a lovely holiday? The story goes that Valentine's Day started long ago, in the time of the Roman Empire. On Feb. 14, they honored Juno, the queen of the gods and goddesses. Juno was also known as the goddess of women and marriage. On Feb. 15, they celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia. It was the third century; Claudius, a mean Emperor who made the people's lives a little harsh, was ruling Rome. He was recruiting men for his army and kept adding land and colonies to his already conquered territories. He wanted 'men to join his army as volunteers and leave their wives and families. He was not very successful suc-cessful in recruiting soldiers, so he decided to pass a decree that would not allow couples to oet married. He thought if men didnt have wives and children it would be easier for him to get more and more soldiers. - v During this time, Valentine was a priest and, in his own words, his favorite activity was performing per-forming marriages. He decided that he was not going to support this law and somehow he would keep marrying people as long as he could escape from Qaudius and his forces. Couples would look for him because they knew he was a defender of love and commitment. He performed per-formed ceremonies in all kinds of settings, especially espe-cially secret dark places, with just ' candlelight, whispering the words of the ceremony. J I can imagine the excitement and fear that Valentine and each of the couples had, as they listened for soldiers' Voices or steps. On one of those nights, they did hear the soldier's sol-dier's steps. The couple escaped but m Valentine was arrested for disobeying disobey-ing the Emperor and thrown in jail. He was told that his punishment was going to be death. While he was in jail, many young people went to visit him. Others threw flowers and notes to his window, expressing that they also believed in love and they admired him for what he had done. One of Valentine's many visitors was the jailer's jail-er's daughter. She was a blind girl who felt sympathy sym-pathy for Valentine, and talked with him for hours. She supported him in his decision to continue con-tinue marrying people. They became good friends, giving each other support in the world of darkness in which she lived and in the remaining days he had to live. Valentine was killed on Feb. 14, 269 A.D. He left a note for his friend, thanking her for her friendship and loyalty, and he signed it "Love from your Valentine." 1 nai note was uie Beginning 01 me custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. For years this day was remembered as a ; religious celebration. Later it was proclaimed a secular holiday instead. It is now a custom for children at school to exchange "Valentines" with their classmates. These are friendly little notes that can be purchased pur-chased or handmade. Children really love to get and give Valentines and also exchange some candies with these notesThis festivity is not only for romantic love, but also to remember all those wonderful family members and friends that stay by your side, whether things are going right or not. It is a time of red roses, chocolate and fuzzy little animals. Some choose to give diamonds to their sweethearts. Maybe you can surprise yours with his favorite meal or have the house cleaned for her so she doesnt have to do it! I hope you had a great Valentine's Day and that you may continue the celebration a little lit-tle bit longer.
