VOLVO'S BI-TURBO S80T6 by Bruce & Holly Hubbard The Advisor Group Volvo has always been a leader and Unlay they have excelled in more than just safety in their vehi-cles. vehi-cles. Not only lias Volvo the best safety features in the world they also offer powerful vehicles with style lh.it turns heads. Today buyers buy-ers who wanted a I5MW, Lexus or other sophisticated sedan often turn to Volvo for their vehicle of choice. A pei led example of luxury and performance is their flagship. The Volvo SH0 line of sedans. The option packages are many. Our high end test car was set up for handling and speed. It was the SKI) Tf Bi -Turbo powered sedan. The car is remarkable. The drive is superb and handling is equivalent to thai of a German marque. Give the Volvo's flagship sedan the SKOTfi pedal to the metal and the car leaps forward with some turbo lag. livery Volvo we test has been state ol the ar t in electronics, safety, safe-ty, and performance. Safety is obvious but now Volvo as Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Ia-xus, etc they have added dynamic stability control, electronic braking, as well as improved traction control and updated ABS brakes to make sure we follow a straight line down the highway. Advanced engine designs promoting pro-moting superior durability, ease of service, fuel efficiency and responsive respon-sive performance distinguish both the naturally aspirated and twin-turbo twin-turbo power plants. Powered by a choice of engines employing the inherently smooth in-line 6-cylin-der design, these silky srvuxith power plants deliver spirited performance. per-formance. Volvo's new six-cylinder, light-prvssurv light-prvssurv bi-turbo engine that was . in out test car has improved low-end low-end torque. More power to the front wheels that drive the car-more car-more acceleration form the get go because of the torque. This RN-type RN-type engine with reduced inner friction and n displacement of 2.9 'J v;'- Tr" i tier or a i d'fcS .3& . scum''.. . J - 1 I V.' THE 2002 VOLVO S80 T6 EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR PHOTO liters (same engine block as the naturally aspirated engine). This engine has higher torque at engine speeds under -4,000 rpm, which results in more power and improved response. This new larger larg-er displacement engine has variable vari-able control of both the intake and exhaust valves. Hie VVR CVVY variable camshaft gives the engine maximum torque at engine speeds from as low as 1,800 rpm (previously (previ-ously at 2,400 rpm). With the two turbochargers, one for each set of three cylinders, the engine reacts very quickly to the throttle. The engine produces from the 2.9 liter engine 268 horsepower at 5200-rpm 5200-rpm with a whopping 280 ft x it pounds of torque at 1800 rpm. When the boost is up, this is a quick car. O to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, sec-onds, through the quarter-mile in 14.9 seconds at 95 mph. With a base price of $42,150, the S80 T6 is priced slightly above many of its six-cylinder competitors and well below the V-8s. The S80T6 out performs per-forms most of the V8's on the market mar-ket today. A new design for the exhaust pipes with a catalytic converter for each set of three cylinders means that the engine burns cleaner. The power is transferred to the front wheel drive four-door rocket ship via a four speed automatic transmission. The Geartronic is on the S80T6 is updated for 2002 with more electronics in the computers to help you drive in every type of environment, When in the Geartronic position the driver merely taps the gear selector forward for-ward or aft to change gears like a manual! Sure it is not a true manual manu-al but it is better than none. Today with two driver families this is the answer. The systems just keep getting get-ting better and with the option of full automatic or "semi-manual" was perfect for our week long test., Working with the engine and transmission is DSCT that keeps the front wheel torque delivering power to the pavement. The DSTC holds the finned -spoked wheels in place while turned on. The ABS sensors tell the transmission when to brake or reduce engine power if the car is out of control. The driver usually does not even know when the intervention is taking place. The traction control and dynamic stability controls on Volvo cars is one of the best things about them. These systems keep you going straight or under control in extremely slippery conditions. The tires on the S80 T6 are the Michelin Pilot MXM4 22550R17. Large but with this power even larger configuration makes sense. The look of the alloy rims the tires are mounted to is wonderful. But, that gorgeous look does not last long when out on a test drive, Brake dust fills the 17-inch alloy wheels requiring continued cleaning. clean-ing. Multiplex electronics eliminates pounds of wiring while increasing component reliability and enhancing enhanc-ing electronic system integration and performance. A long list of technical innovations, from mirrors mir-rors with memories to headrests that fold at the touch of a button, provide the complete driving experience. The mountains of Park City and Salt Lake City do not hinder the twin turbo Volvo from fulhpoten-tial fulhpoten-tial of the four-door sedan, In the high mountains nothing performs like a turbo. The bi-turbo is perhaps per-haps even better. As we all know in the mountain a normally aspirated aspi-rated engine loses power as every thousand feet is climbed. Not so with a turbo. This is the vehicle of choice for us in Park City or Salt Lake when we need to get to the slopes quickly. As stated the DSTC and STC stability controls work to keep us on the roads even with the worst ice, snow conditions. condi-tions. This is one of the best vehi- photo by Bruce Hubbard cles for high altitude driving. The interior of the flagship S80 is special with luxurious appointments appoint-ments everywhere. The leather is accented by wood on the center console and dash. The interior is not a piece of art like an Audi but is still exquisite. Behind the wheel all controls are easy to reach and work well. One of the best features of Volvos has been for years the seats. No wonder when Lear seating was able to buy Volvo's searing division divi-sion they were ecstatic. The seats hold you well and the head rests are superb. Aside from the great looks the front seats are heated. The 3 position memory controls for the drivers side allow for you and two other drivers to select the settings for seat adjustments and side mirror adjustments. Our test car had the in dash 4 disc CD changer, and AMFM stereo, The optional sound system on our test car cost $1000. Well worth every dime. The surround sound and special speakers turn the flagship S80 T6 into a true concert con-cert hall, Out test car also had another optional feature that included thicker side glass for intrusion protection pro-tection plus it made the car exceptionally excep-tionally quiet. Many other luxury options are available for those that demand it all. Winter and summer packages are offered. In the South the ltrge sunmoonroof is a plus. Our Volvo S80T6 test car was : not outfitted with their superb optional navigational system. Volvo's navigation system has a pop up color screen on the dash that is wonderful. Volvo designers put a lot of thought into it. By placing the screen on the dash you do not have to stare away from the road. Just as they have done with the volume and cruise controls that are on the steering wheel. These redundant controls allow you again to keep your eyes on the road. Volvo designers keep coming up with more safety innovations. The Volvo Navigation System (VNS) is an electronic information and route guidance system that helps the driver find any destination destina-tion under a variety of options (e.g. shortest route, fastest time, use of highways and toll roads). The system keeps track of the position posi-tion of the vehicle using the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system and automatically recalculates the route if the driver goes off the system's sys-tem's plan. The previous generation genera-tion used CD-ROM media to store maps and data. Now instead of nine disc that cost a fortune you have one disc that navigates you in the North American continent. The Volvo S80 T6's other safety features include standard Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain (IC), Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS), seat belts with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners in all seating positions, plus Volvo's safety cage construction. The Volvo S80 T6's ride and drive are superior to all but a few sedans. The best things about the Volvo S80T6s are learned only after driving the car for a great distance. dis-tance. So many sophisticated systems sys-tems are on the car that only after a week of driving do you appreciate appreci-ate them.
