Show WedThurs, February 13-14. Sacrificing all for From bagels to biathlon: Campbell makes unlikely journey to the Olympic Games i . MIDWAY. Utah (AP) Dan Campbell's days used to begin and end in the back of his pickup truck. He slept in his gray 1992 Chevrolet for six months in 2000 working in a bagel shop, tak-. tak-. ing a few college i i courses and spending nearly every penny on biathlon training. The Winter Games were the eoal. but he thought his ShOWer. reality would keep them out of reach. That changed at the U.S. Olympic trials tri-als in December, when Campbell surprisingly sur-prisingly earned the final spot on the American team. He'll compete com-pete in the 20-kilometer biathlon Monday and the 4x7.5-kilometer relay Feb. 20. "He definitely wasn't afraid to live what most people would call a frugal lifestyle to be able to pursue the sport." U.S. teammate team-mate Lawton Redman said. "There are a lot of people out there who can throw around some big numbers as far as medals won. but Dan represents what it really means to be an amateur athlete. No endorse-ments, endorse-ments, no corporate sponsors. He's pretty much done it all on his own. , ,"Hc's a low-profile athlete in .a 1 low-profile sport. But he's earned a spot here, and nobody will ever be able to take that away." Campbell's Olympic odyssey began as a teen-ager. He spent three years on the junior national biathlon team and even finished 14th. the second sec-ond American finisher behind Jay Hakkinen. at the 1997 junior world championships. But his skiing and shooting slipped the following year, a critical crit-ical plunge at a time when he was being considered for the national team. It cost him his first shot at the Olympics. He got another chance when the United States started a pro- Forsberg recovers to capture bronze Continued from B-6 missed two shots. Forsberg explained, "but someone some-one told me on the course I was still only 15 seconds from the bronze so I skied faster." And faster. So the then 21 -year-old Minnesotan moved to Park City in February 2000 and got a job at a bagel shop. Still wanting to continue his biathlon training and his education, educa-tion, he knew he wouldn't be able to afford an apartment, college col-lege and the expensive sport; it cost him about $15,000 a year to maintain his skiing equipment and rifle and buy ammunition. He didn't even consider giving up the sport or putting off school, so he sacrificed his living arrangements. He locked his clothes and a few personal items under a topper top-per on the bed of his truck and parked it outside the bagel shop. He didnt have a television, a phone or a shower. Just a warm sleeping bag and a flashlight to help him study. Campbell worked from 4 to 11 a.m. each day, then spent a few hours either lifting weights or skiing before taking afternoon classes at the University of Utah. He would train even more in the evenings, then head back to the truck to study. He had answers for all the obvious questions: What about the winter weather? weath-er? Her time of 48:08.3 handed the wooden medal to Russian Olga Pyleva (48:14.0 with two misses, too) with Bulgaria's Ekaterina Dafovska completing the top five. , "When I came to the range at the end. my legs were shaking so hard," Forsberg said. Campbell considered . quitting several times. raiK "Occasionally I would their S.SSLi, S2 other competitors and if I was even making any progress because I was so busy," he said. And he might have quit mm if not for his former coach in Minnesota, Piotr Bednarski, who convinced him to return home to train after six months in the back of the pickup. "Going back home, it felt kind of like giving up," Campbell said. "I was living the dream. I had a simple life and I was really' happy with it. I figured biathlon was what I had going for me the most.' So I thought I've got to totally go for it at this point or it's not worth it any more." After working with Bednarski for more than a year completely com-pletely changing his stance, fine-tuning fine-tuning his rifle and focusing on basics like squeezing the trigger and limiting movement on his target Campbell finished second sec-ond in the opening 20-kilometer trials race and added a fourth-place fourth-place finish a day later to earn the final spot on the four-man team. "Danny is the ultimate American athlete." said U.S. women's biathlete Kara Salmela. Campbell has moved back to Utah, training daily on the Soldier Hollow course to prepare pre-pare for the games. This time, though, he was backed by the U.S. Biathlon Association and didn't have to sleep in the bed of his truck. "It's quite an honor and represents repre-sents a lot of hard work." he said. "It's just a great experience. Hopefully I don't have to try to make it my own again."
