With pictures of commercial jetliners jet-liners slamming into the World Trade Center towers, bodies hurtling from the upper floors and the buildings eventually collapsing shown repeatedly on nearly every television channel for day, parents worry about the impact of such images on the most impressionable members of society. Even more, how does one explain the acts of terror to their children? Dr. Douglas Goldsmith, the executive director of the Children's Center in Salt Lake City and an expert on childhood anxiety, anxi-ety, depression and attachment disorders, dis-orders, addressed a group of concerned con-cerned parents at the Jim Santy Auditorium last week to offer advice on these issues. The presentation, entitled "Parenting in a Time of Fear and Uncertainty," was cosponsored by Park City High School and the National Alliance for Mental Illness, and was the first of a continuing con-tinuing series on mental health topics. Goldsmith said today's fast-paced, fast-paced, over-scheduled society has "created for many children a great deal of anxiety." "One of the concerns I have is that families are talking way too much to their children about crises," he said. "When I was a kid, there was a keen sensitivity about what children should know and not know." Goldsmith said parents need to tell their children there are certain issues they do not need to know about. "We need to turn off the televisions. televi-sions. Children do not need to see certain things... we dont want to expose them to too much," he said. "We've got to be careful about what we tell them." Goldsmith said preschool- and elementary-age children "need a sense of security from us." Too much exposure to the Sept. 11 scenes, he said, will create feelings of anxiety, insecurity and fear that young children do not need to deal with. "Unfortunately, that is going to feel like lying to the children," he said. "We need to tell them this is a grown-up problem, and grownups grown-ups are going to take care of it." Goldsmith said explaining to concerned kids that "you dont need to worry anymore... the president pres-ident is going to catch those bad guys" will offer a "sense of security, securi-ty, and that's what I'm looking for." "Their lives, on a daily basis, are traumatic. When we add to that pictures of real bad guys, we are not doing them justice," he added. i s 8 i i, i k a 'fit if f Vacation At Home In A Four Seasons Sunroom! linjoy )hr lJfe...l:ooir Your Dream! 1 v INVEST IN YOUR HOME, INCREASE IT'S VALUE AND ENHANCE YOUR LIFESTYLE! Simpkiss, who is also an aquatics aquat-ics instructor at Ecker Hill Middle School, will present, "United We Stand, Prepared We're Strong" Sunday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Jim Santy Auditorium. The evening will include a slide presentation taken at the attack on the World Trade Center, including Ground Zero and triage settings. Simpkiss said the emphasis will be on public awareness of supplies and training found to be helpful in the event of a crisis. The American Red Cross will discuss disaster training and the Park City Fire Department will present information about emergency emer-gency issues. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door for New York victims and their families. Simpkiss has also scheduled a community training for first aid, CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillation) on Nov. 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Christian Fellowship Church, 1400 Bitner Road. The cost is $55, and participants will receive first aid, CPR and AED certification. "The hope is that we can recruit volunteers from the community in the future that will be able to help in a time of need," Simpkiss said. Enrollment for the community training is limited. For more information infor-mation about the presentation and the training, or to enroll, call Simpkiss at 658-0165. Simpkiss was in New York on Sept. 11 for a conference with paramedics, emergency medical technicians and emergency room doctors. She and her colleagues set up a makeshift triage and treatment treat-ment center for the World Trade Center victims in the ballroom of the Brooklyn Marriott immediately immediate-ly after the attacks. Bus safety discussed Continued from A-11 Also, improved signage could improve awareness of the runaway run-away truck lane, DeHaan said. In the meantime, Chaplin said he will continue to worry about school busses and the trucks headed northbound. , "It's a state road, it does not meet state standards and it's dangerous," dan-gerous," he said. 1 onthewikter games!
