Show Saturday, October 20, 2001 Park City ; 0 Miners head into last game of the year j with chance of first-division promotion : submitted by Park City , U16 boys soccer team Sometimes, all of the pieces fit together, like they did on Monday, when the Park City Boys U-16 soccer team dismantled disman-tled Lone Peak, 8-0. With Brett Cosby's unexpected unexpect-ed return from a torn calf muscle, the Miners were nearly back to full strength. Park City's play reflected four months of hard work and development, as the team out-hustled and out-muscled a Lone Peak squad that only brought 10 players to Trailside Park. An unlikely cast of characters provided the scoring, as Nick Tucker, Ivan Tapia and Vince Galer had a collective coming-out coming-out party. Galer, who joined the team fresh off the lacrosse season, fired the opening salvo less than five minutes into the match. Miners knock off Trojans Continued from B-1 Dixie and Judge dropping a 2-1 match against Ben Lomond. The Miners faced Dixie in Friday's semifinal match at Taylorsville High School (results weren't available at press time), and should they win, they will face the winner of the Ogden-Ben Lomond match for the title, also at Taylorsville High. Free kicks: One of the keys in both of Park City's playoff wins is goalkeeper Megan Carlin. The first-year starter made several crucial saves, including a jumping catch of a 30-yard shot in the 55th minute. Fish says Carlin, who has struggled with long balls for much of the season, has improved steadily as her confidence rises. "She's settled down and has a lot of confidence," he said. "Once she became our starting goalie, she got confidence and has been playing well ever since." . . . Carlin did concede one goal Tuesday, a 67th-minute strike from Morgan's Jayne Smalley, but it was hardly her fault. And Tapia, who barely bare-ly weighs 100 pounds in full kit, notched his first two goals of the season. Tapia's goals received the loudest cheers. "We had to carry him off the field on Saturday with a muscle pull; I was surprised that Ivan was able to play today," coach Lee Gitlin said. The usual suspects were not entirely silent, however. Forward Alex Roising, the Miner's leading goal scorer this season, was the happy recipient of a well-weighted through ball from Jesse Palmer (who is currently second to Roising in scoring). Roising, whose finishing has become nearly automatic of late, easily converted the breakaway opportunity. Not coincidentally, with Carlin's defense lax in shut- . . . Perfect field conditions and weather benefited the Miners' passing game. Midfielders Ryan Hart and Emmett Moffett were very effective effec-tive in possessing the ball through the middle third something that Park City has struggled with all fall. Outside midfielders Chris Hollender and Spencer Donovan frequently combined with David Gitlin (left outside back) and Chad Agy (right outside back) in combination combina-tion passes or by switching the point of attack. "I caught myself being a spectator spec-tator at times," Gitlin said. "The way they worked the ball was just a pleasure to watch." Sweeper Matt Smith functioned func-tioned like an orchestra conductor, conduc-tor, organizing the defense and communicating as the Miners built attacks with 10-15 consecutive consecu-tive passes. After Park City built up a sizeable size-able lead, goalkeeper Rock Christeson swapped positions with Palmer for some rare time out on the field. "I don't think Jesse needs to worry about losing his starting position to Rock, or vice versa," Gitlin said. Christeson racked up his third consecutive shutout, for a seasonal season-al goals-against average of 0.27. Park City closes out its regular fall season on Saturday, October 20th. 2:30 p.m. at Ecker Hill Middle School, when the Miners face Advantage. The winner of that game is likely to secure a spot in first division. Park City was also pleased to learn that the team was invited to play in the Turkey Shoot tournament tourna-ment in Las Vegas.
