Or a champion. After Lori McMahon's team defeated Judge for the second time this season, Park City High's tennis coach is both. After last spring's graduation took seven of her top players, McMahon has guided the undefeated unde-feated Miners to the Region 10 regular-season title. P,ark City clinched the title and the division's top seed for this weekend's region tournament tourna-ment by once again slamming Judge 4-1. Monday's relatively easy victory victo-ry and the successes the Miners have experienced this season have both raised McMahon's eyebrows. eye-brows. "I am pleasantly surprised," she said. "I thought Judge would be tougher this year but our girls are stronger." One of those girls is Liza Salowey, who set the tone Monday by winning 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles position. The Miners also got wins Monday from Melissa Zamarin (6-4, 7-5), and the doubles pairings pair-ings of Caitie Smith-Kristin Farr (6-3, 6-1) and Sammy Cfandall-Sheila Cfandall-Sheila Culajara (6-3, 6-0). Leslie Schiesswohl again drew Judge's top player in the No. 1 singles spot, losing 6-1, 6-4. Park City enters the region tournament as one of the hottest teams in the state. Still, McMahon is ensuring her squad" doesn't get overconfident. She wouldn't even say her team is the favorite for regionals. "I don't like to say that stuff," she said, "because you never know. On any given day, whoever comes ready to play will play well." McMahon did concede her team has been ready for every match so far this season and there is little reason to believe the Miners will have a letdown. "The girls are playing well," she said. "They're ready and confident." con-fident." State tournament seedings are based on how each team does at its respective region championship, champi-onship, meaning there is still plenty on the line for the Miners. The varsity tournament began Friday and continues today at the Dee Smith Center in Salt Lake City (near Hogle Zoo). The junior varsity tournament is at the 11th Ave. courts in Sajj Lake. At the net: While the Miners had already wrapped up their regular-season title, they still had a match on hand against Granite-j Park City easily defeated the Farmers in Tuesday's match, wirt ning 5-0. . . . The J.V. also fared welli against Judge. Lindsay Behnke, Casey Brown and Josiq Ringelberg all picked up singles; wins against the Bulldogs, whilfc) doubles pairings Caitlin Reid-) Amanda Ellis and Allison Finston-Kelly Black added victcw . ries as the Miners beat their rivals 5-1. A Mighty Mites beat Highland in Ute Conference play Park City team improves to 5-1 with impressive victory over host Rams submitted by Park City Mighty Mites football team The Park City Mighty Mites traveled to Highland last Saturday and came away with a 24-7 win, improving this year's record to 5-1. The team rebounded rebound-ed after a difficult loss to Viewmont and regained its winning win-ning ways behind a total team effort and a tenacious defense. With improved play by the offensive line of center Geoff Holt, guards Bridger and Travis Walzcr, tackles Trevor Williams and Nick Ritter, quarterback Ryan Papez was able to complete two touchdown passes with great catches by Steven Ryberg and Searle Vincent. Downfield blocking by backs Skylar Larsen and Ethan Moser was significant in the- Mighty Mites' ground game with halfback half-back Searle Vincent rushing for a TD. The few times the Park City's offense was stopped, punter Brett Miller set Highland back with well-placed punts while also mak ing a long kick return during the Rams only kickoff. Others contributing to solid offensive play were tight ends Dillion Slaugh and Austin Molinaro, and guards Daniel Castellanos, Doug Hamilton and Jeremy Morgan. On the defensive end, the Mighty Mites' team defense and gang tackling was very solid. With Highland's running game stuffed by down linemen Patrick O'Connor and Trevor Williams, frequent tackles by Larsen and Vincent, the Rams came out passing pass-ing in the second half. Cornerbacks Ethan Moser, Steven Ryberg and Sam Taggart were credited with solid man defense, while Papez came up with a key interception to stop Highlands' building momentum and effort to get back into the game. Also contributing to the many defensive stops were linebacker Wes Uribe, cornerback Trent Jorgcnsen and the Walzer boys af defensive ends. -J The Mighty Mites playoffj drive continues today at Eckerj Hill Middle School with their, final home game beginning at noon against Murray.
