I know there is a foot of snow on the ground, but I refuse to acknowledge it. Winter is over, and not a moment too soon, I say. It's April, it's time for the two weeks of spring we get here in Utah before it becomes summer and gets hot. I have been sleeping with my five iron for most of the last two months, just waiting for enough grass to poke through to allow me to begin my annual golf-ball assault on parked cars. A long-time resident of Utah, this was my first winter in Park City. Until I began my tenure at the Record, I rarely ventured across Parley's Summit between November and April. Though less than 40 minutes apart, there are many differences between a Salt Lake Valley winter and a Park City winter. There are a few things I learned this winter. 1. Never, ever forget to factor in snow, or a lack of it, in your plans. My first day of work, 1 got up extra early to make sure I was going to be on time. It was snowing snow-ing in the canyon, snowing at the junction, snowing the entire length of 224. It snowed all day. I was not on time, and I was very late getting home. In the course of the next few months, I was sur: prised by snow many, many times, enough that I began to wonder if it was possible for me to learn a lesson. A total of four World Cup ski events were cancelled this year because of snow. I always figured the one thing you could race in a snowstorm was skis. I was wrong. Of course, a sled dog race that was supposed to happen in February was cancelled because there wasn't enough snow. Go figure. Here it is April, and it looks PCHS April Sports Calendar April 17 Tennis Wasatch Softball vs. Judge April 18 Soccer Union Track vs. Wasatch, Judge, Lehi, Union, Uintah April 19 Softball vs. Lehi April 20 Soccer vs. Judge April 24 Tennis Uintah Softball vs. Uintah April 25 Soccer Waterford April 27 Soccer Vs. Two weeks ago, I was taking bets on whether or not the snow would hold out until the resorts April 15 closing date. 2. Always take skiing very, very seriously. This is not always easy. I was a recreational skier for several sev-eral years, until my body decided it was more fun to see how big it could get its joints to swell. Even on my best day, I wasn't a great skier, but I had fun, and I goofed off a lot. I never raced anybody. In Park City, you can't throw a broken binding without hitting a member of one ski league or another. They are not all the World Cup tour, but it is best to keep that under your hat. 3. The Olympics are coming. You already know this. I knew this too, but now when I set a glass down the table and pick it up again, I see an Olympic ring. There is not a person in Park City who will not be greatly affected by the Games. Heck, it seems like half the town is competing. com-peting. The ones who aren't know someone who is, or will be renting rent-ing out their homes to Olympic-related Olympic-related visitors. Parties on Main Street, skier-days during the Games, Olympic sized construction construc-tion projects, my brain is full. Not a day goes by without something Olympics-related happening. This is fine. It will be fun, it will be exciting, we will all be very tired when it is over. Forget renting out the guestroom, the real money to be made during the Olympics will be in black-market sedatives.' 4. John Benson is the best high school basketball coach around. He turned a losing program around in less than year, he is painfully honest about his play ers, his team and everything else. Even at the high school level, he is a breath of fresh air in sports. A guy who wants to win, but because of what winning can do for kids, not just to watch someone some-one else lose. It isnt often a journalist jour-nalist gets to say this about someone some-one he covers, but it was a pleasure pleas-ure to work with Benson. He is a class act, start to finish. There is a chance Benson wont be back at Park City High School next year, and it would be a great loss for the school and the community. Parents and the school should do what ever it takes to keep him around. 5. Most winter sports are for crazy people. Seventy-five miles per hour on a sled, face first? None for me, thank you. 6. In the time it takes to get from 13th East in Salt Lake to Bonanza Drive in Park City, it is possible, if you obey all traffic laws and speed limits, to listen to the entire Willie NelsonJohnny Cash Storytellers album. 7. Kimball Junction is much better bet-ter now that the traffic lights have been installed. That is about it, I think. There are others who might have gleaned more knowledge over the course of the winter, but I think I got all the important parts. Now, if it would only get warm enough for a driving range to open.
