Show Saturday, February 24, 2001 The Park Record B-3 Cliff notes I Making the world feel at home The world is welcome here. That's the idea, anyway. The Olympic Village is going to be top notch. The competition venues are by all accounts some of the best on earth. The Salt Lake Organizing Committee has nearly put the bid scandal behind it. As the 2002 Games approach and the season of test events draws to a close, the most impressive impres-sive thing has been the behavior of international visitors. Despite their inexperience with the racecourses, ski jumps and bobsled tracks in Utah, European athletes have beaten Americans with regularity, and ease. All the training, all the advanced knowledge knowl-edge of the facilities, and most of them might as well be in Austria. In the downhill events, in the luge, in the nordic races, Europeans are exacting revenge for a century of U.S. superpower domination. But there has been no finger wagging, no crude dancing, danc-ing, not even any gloating. The international community has beaten the Americans at home, and done it with class. They could be exacting some revenge for U.S. gloating during the Summer Games. They could walk with the swagger of people who know they wont lose. But they dont. In the women's cross country World Cup at Soldier Hollow, when the highest American finish was 14th, the victorious Italian team talked about how important it would be not discount the U.S. in 2002. When he took second in the men's luge ait the Utah Olympic Park a place he had been sliding for only a week and the Americans had been training for years Austrian Marcus Prock said the Park was a facility the country should be proud of, and that the field was so tight, it was hard to pick a favorite for the Games. They have been models of by Sterling Clifford diplomacy and sportsmanship, the out of town guests. And for the most part, American athletes, who dont have much in the way of bragging rights, have been the same. It makes it that much sadder when American spectators and volunteers decide to be poor sports. Last weekend was a good one at the at the Utah Olympic Park for team USA. Lincoln DeWitt won his race and the World Cup, Tricia Stumpf slid into fifth. And the U.S. women's bobsled team walked away with all three medals in Saturday's race. That last win was not lost on some Americans at the Park. As it became apparent that there would be three American sleds on the podium, there was much rejoicing in the media center. cen-ter. Reporters from around the wofld sat quietly, watching a familiar sport, and respecting the rules against openly cheering for a team. Others, all from this country, were not quiet, or respectful. "Hey, someone should remind the other teams that the Olympic spirit is just to compete," one gentleman gen-tleman said, loudly. The irritated glares from Swedish and British reporters went unnoticed. When the rest of the media contingent returned to the media center from the course, reactions were much the same. ' It was indeed a remarkable finish fin-ish to Saturday's competition. The U.S. is not known for its winter sports success, which should make Americans that much more graceful grace-ful in victory. We want to win badly in this country. Given the size and competitive com-petitive nature of the U.S., we will win sometimes. It would be nice if winning could be done with a bit of humility. It would be nice if we could make the world feel welcome here.
