Show Saturday, February 17, 2001 The Park Record C-3 Arts in the spotlight Artist Marshall Noice brings vivid color to landscapes Marshall Noice realized his passion for painting landscapes while attending a summer photography pho-tography workshop in Carmel, Calif. "It was a fluke." is how Noice described the opportunity that determined his artistic career. "It was pure good luck." Noice was an assistant at the workshop for several famous professional photographers among which was the renowned nature photographer, Ansel Adams. The artist said Adams has been one of the greatest influences influ-ences on his work. Noice admits it was Adams that taught him how to see light. Most importantly, "the workshop absolutely solidified in my mind the worthiness of landscape as subject matter." Noice .explained. ! Noice spent his college years concentrating on black and white photography. Distinct influence from his years of studying photography is evident in the artist's luminous oil paintings paint-ings and pastels. His work makes natural use of composition, composi-tion, depth and electric colors that often resemble filtered photography pho-tography and hints of tungsten and fluorescent lighting. "I think the time 1 spent concentrating con-centrating on black and white photography has had a huge impact on the way I use color," the artist said. Noice does not make up the colors he sees. The purple trees and magenta mountain scapes of his paintings are inspired by shadowed light and the quality of the air. His palette is inspired by the colors he already sees in nature, just taken up a notch. "1 feel no obligation whatsoever to create a landscape that is in any way. shape or form literal, from a color standpoint," Noice said. While most of his work remains fairly accurate to the geography of the subject, the colors are exaggerated from what he sees. "1 just try to take the chroma up a notch or two, or six," he added with a laugh. "The finished landscapes, even though they may not be a literal rendition of the location, are PHOTO COURTESY OF CODA GALLERY Artist Marshall Noice is also a drummer in a Latin Jazz Band. His colorful landscapes are currently cur-rently on display at the Coda Gallery, 804 Main Street in Park City. true to the spirit of the place that I'm painting." The artist's oil paintings convey con-vey a graceful plein-air styliza-tion styliza-tion while his pastels fall along the lines of abstract expression- Despite their differences, the two mediums have an integral relationship. Noice said that when he goes out on location to work he normally takes pastels and paper and creates them right there. Occasionally, Noice will even take black and white photographs photo-graphs at a location to be used as a reference later. He finds that when he takes color photographs photo-graphs his work has a tendency to "dive into a literal rut that I don't like to be in." Noice said his usual approach to the landscape is to work en plein-air with pastel at a location, loca-tion, and then return to the studio stu-dio where he paints in oil, using the pastel drawings as a reference. refer-ence. "Very few of the oils are done on location," he explained. One way that Noice makes a distinction dis-tinction between the two mediums medi-ums is by calling his oil paintings more "complete." Noice said pastels allow him to form a rough, loose idea of color relationships rela-tionships that he develops a step further with oil. Growing up in an artistic and musical family has had profound impact on the artist. Noice was the drummer in a family who went on to play professionally for four years. Today, he is the drummer in a Latin jazz orchestra and a blues band that will release its second CD shortly. The artist always listens to music while he paints. "I'm very effected by the music I listen to," he said. Noice admitted he listens to a wide range of music, "anything from Willie Dixon to Stravinksy". "I never listen to music that's remotely like easy listening music," the artist said. "It always has to have as much impact as the work I'm trying to create." Since he likes to paint fast Noice finds it a necessity to listen to music that evokes speed and exuberance.
