Show Wednesday, February 14, 2001 The Park Record C-5 "Cline" back at Egyptian by Rick Brough RECORD GUEST WRITER 12 "The Wedding Planner" If it were champagne. " The Wedding Planner" would be low-fizz. low-fizz. It s a merely tolerable romantic roman-tic comedy. But the film "s almost-saving almost-saving grace is the effective chemistry chem-istry between Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConnaughey. How effective? Let's just say that the two stars can maintain a romantic roman-tic mood, even when McConnaughey is burdened with a stone testicle (broken off from a statue of Mars) that's been accidentally acciden-tally Super-Glued to his hand. Lopez plays Mary Fiore. who is cool, smart and the ultimate full-service full-service professional at weddings. She knows the right words to calm down a jittery bride: she can (via earphone) feed a gracious speech to a tongue-tied best man: and she sports a utility pack with everything from breath spray to sedatives to Super-Glue remover. But Mary always the bridal choreographer, never the bride isn't touched by romance, until handsome young doctor Steve (McConnaughey ) rescues her from a runaway dumpster. Thereafter, he sweeps her off her feet with an open-air movie in the park: a dance under the moonlight: and his explanation expla-nation of w hy he prefers brown-colored M&Ms. Naturally, he turns out to be the designated groom at the big-ticket wedding which could propel Mary to a full partnership at her firm. Though Steve and Mary carry on. there are signals going on (practically (practi-cally blaring AA-O.OGAI) that they're meant for each other. Both of them prefer the same kind of wedding (a simple affair on the beach). And Steves bride (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), though likable, is just a bit domineering. domi-neering. McConnaughey carries a lot of the movie. With his drawl and crinkly smile, he brings likability and sex appeal to a guy who is. by objective standards, a cad. (He justifies jus-tifies his pre-nuptial date with Mary by saying. ;I was just being a guy. ') Lopez is just mildly skilled with the standard wacky situations given to the likes of Sandra Bullock and Meg Ryan. (From now on. there should be a ban on scenes where the heroine crawls on all fours around a public place to avoid an embarrassing encounter.) But she is convincing as a romantic soul yearning to break free. Among the other burdens on the film: An incessant musical score keeps reminding you that you're watching a comedy: Mary is given a daffy assistant (Judy Greer, working like mad to provide comic relief): and the other man (Justin Chambers) a paisano from Mary's childhood in the old country who thinks she's his arranged bride, is obnoxious at first but ultimately prov es to be a good sport. Continued from C-1 approachable and personable. She loved people. 1 dont ever think she felt like she was above anyone. Even though Louise was obviously starstruck. immediately imme-diately Patsy just took her in." With her natural affability, dine had no problem cultivating cultivat-ing a following of loyal fans. Once her songs began to appear on pop charts, Cline took staid 60s America by storm. Petersen explains that Cline s honesty and emotion were unusual at that time period. "At that particular time in the 60s, there weren't that many country singers," said Petersen. "Here comes this bawdy broad with a spectacular voice singing about emotions that women during that time period could identify with. Almost as a mentor for them, like. 1 can be more open now." Sansoni shared an interesting fact that Cline-fanatics will find intriguing: Cline actually hated "1 Fall to Pieces," fighting her manager tooth and nail over the song. Ironically, the songs that the public enjoyed had little meaning to Cline, picked by a manager that had a knack for feeling out the next great thing. According to Sansoni, the songs Cline championed never made it to the pop charts. "Always, Patsy Cline" gives audiences a chance to experience Cline for an evening that also offers personal insights into the performer's life. Both Sansoni and Petersen expressed their affinity for the production and for Park City as a community. "I love it here." said Sansoni. "The community is charming. It's almost like a vacation when you get to do a show up here. Because it's gorgeous, and the people are so nice and supportive. support-ive. It's really a treat." "I was so sad at the end of the season last year because it's truly a treat every single night to come out and do the show." Sansoni said. "It's Andree. and the band, and the people and the venue are all so wonderful. It's nauseating nause-ating how fun it is," Sansoni joked. "Always, Patsy Cline " opens with a featured "First Nighter's" performance Friday, Feb. 16 at H p.m. at the Mary G. Steiner Egyptian Theater. 328 Main St. Tickets are $30 for cabaret seats. $20 for adults, and $12 for students stu-dents and seniors, and $10 for children.
