Commercial and Residential 1-877-361-5419 The Park D.V. still work: After 20 years Deer Valley is still diamond of worldwide ski resorts thanks to Eriksen SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Twenty years ago no, 21 to be exact Stein Eriksen stood atop a barren mountain top and pointed point-ed in a wide, sweeping motion with his ski pole to snow -covered slopes below and said, in a noticeably humble tone. This is it." It. meaning the future site of the crow n jew el of ski resorts. A diamond, he emphasized, not a ruby or sapphire or zircon placed in a setting made to look like a real diamond. Someday. Deer Valley would be one of the finest ski areas in the country. No, retract that, the world. OK. Let's see, there was a snow cat parked off to the left and what looked like a nicely groomed trail down the mountain. moun-tain. But there wasnt so much as a lift tower in site, or a trail sign, or a skier, for that matter. The 10 people listening to Eriksen comprised the entire day's receipts. No lodges, no ski school or ski patrol and not so much as a mountain hamburger or a Snickers for sale. Just snowcat tours in January 1980 to show a vision. This was a first-glimpse preview pre-view of available assets, which consisted of four mountain tops, all under ownership, and a time Heisman runner-up 'passes' through Utah Quarterback Josh Heupel came from South Dakota by way of Logan, Utah; SALT LAKE CITY ( AP) Two years ago. former Utah State coach Dave Arslanian wasn't able to persuade quarterback Josh Heupel to join him on campus cam-pus in Logan, Utah. Good thing, as it turns out, for Heupel. The Oklahoma quarterback finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting Saturday to Florida State's Chris Weinke. Had Heupel gone to Utah State, he almost certainly wouldn't would-n't have been a Heisman candidate, candi-date, let alone a finalist. "It would not have turned out that way for him if he hadnt made that decision," Arslanian said. Arslanian was fired one year ago after two seasons at Utah State. He was the coach at Weber State when he recruited Heupel out of high school in Aberdeen, SD. Well, Deer Valley entered its 20th season over the wtekend with a rollback to opening-day prices, among other things a $20 day pass, and recognition as one of the finest ski areas in the world. Recently, it was voted the No. 2 ski area in tha country, behind Vail, in a ski magazine's skier's poll. It is the highest rating by a Utah resort. , "But it took awhOe for people to learn what we wefe all about," said Bob Wheaton, presidentgeneral manager of Deer Valley. Wheaton also celebrated his 20th season with Deer Valley and. in fact, was honored a few months back as recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award given by the Intetaiountain Ski Areas Association. That first season. Deer Valley opened with five lifts a double and four triples and 230 employees, incliiding 23 ski school instructors, Wheaton included. "To be honest, I don't know-how know-how we did it today we have more than 400 skt school instructors instruc-tors but we did. The quality was there, but it took a couple of years for people to realize it," he said. To be exact, about 10 years. Deer Valley opened with the Arslanian, who took the Utah State job the next yeaj. Entering his second season with the Aggies, Arslanian expected Heupel to join him. There was only one problem with that plan. Heupel had left Weber State-when State-when Arslanian did, transferring to Snow Junior College in Ephraim. Utah. And after he threw fof 2,300 yards and 28 touchdowns as a sophomore, the big- boys came calling. , lt , Oklahoma's . aewly" . hired coach. Bob Stoops, wit; among them. : Z' ' - Heupel decided to g with the Sooners and broke the hews to Arslanian on Christmas Eve 1998. "It was the worst Christmas I've had, I'll tell you that," Arslanian said. "I remember, I wamad. I was heartbroken, and ! talked hard. There were tissues near the lifts for skiers "They used to joke that other resorts had tissues, tis-sues, but we were the first to keep the. dispensers full," said W heaton and valets to carry-skis, carry-skis, open doors and answer questions. The cafeteria staff wore white coats, the food looked almost too good to eat and the surroundings were 5-star-plus. "I think, though, coming out of the box we presented ourselves our-selves as too exclusive. If we could do it over, I think we'd do it differently. We are a family ski area, and we try, no matter who you are, to make you feel welcome," wel-come," Wheaton said. We get a lot of celebrities, but they soon learn around here they're treated like evervone else." After a good start, however, the real estate market crashed and plans to expand were stopped. Other work, however, didnt. Take the mountain, for example. Wheaton said work actually' started on Deer Valley three years before opening day. "There were just so many open mine shafts and mine dumps we had to reclaim, and scars on the landscape from mining. min-ing. We planted thousands and thousands of trees. Even though we were on private land, we worked with the U.S. Forest Service to see how we could get someone for spring ball. But then, come fall, some hotshot hot-shot freshman will come in there and you'll be a second thought,"' he recalled. Arslanian knew that tactic was a gamble. "I was treading a thin line there because Josh is just so darn competitive that he might have just said, 'Oh, yeah? Watch me.' On the other hand, it was Oklahoma. What else could I do?" Arslanian said. Jerry Graybeal. who replaced Arslanian at Weber State, tried to talk Heupel into staying. But when Heupel said he wanted to play, Graybeal told him UCLA transfer Steve Buck would start in spring practice. Heupel left for Snow College a s'Hort time later. "I got to watch him lift weights, though," Graybeal said. Arslanian was fired last December pfter a 4-7 season. He said Heupel "deserves" the Heisman because he had a great season in leading Oklahoma to a perfect record and No. 1 national ranking. ', Wheaton said the turning; point for Deer Valley was in; 1990. Business was good and! expansion went forward, first to; Flagstaff Mountain, then, two; vears ago. to Empire Canyon. ; Today. Deer Valley offers 19. lifts and 1.750 skiable acres oft terrain off four different moun-J tain tops. j Also, under a policy started 20-years 20-years ago of setting a ceiling im ticket sales, which was 3.000 back,' in 1981. Deer Valley has no more; than 5,000 people on the slopes on any one day. ' It is a number Wheaton admits' could be higher, but he said he' feels that on peak days "it would jeopardize what we started 20 years ago, and that is to deliver a quality experience." "I couldnt be happier for him," Arslanian said. ' Arslanian is currently advising the new XFL franchise in Alabama while his brother heads a legal team that is pursuing a lawsuit against Utah State for firing fir-ing him. His successor at L'lah State, Mick Dennehy. remembers having hav-ing Heupel attend summer camps when he coached at Montana. But instead of recruiting Heupel, Dennehy pursued a Colorado player who didnt pan out. "You could tell right from the get-go that he had all kinds of smarts and athletic ability," Dennehy said. "And if a guy can play, it usually usu-ally all comes out in the wash." Dennehy remains one of the few coaches to have beaten Heupel. Montana defeated Weber State 38-13 when Heupel was a freshman.
