It is the name Slamdancc has given to its new Internet-based film festival. It is also probably an accurate adjective for the state of the independent film world since the recent explosion of digital video (DV) onto the budget-conscious budget-conscious film stage. This year. Slamdance organizers set up the ".cave a room filled with computers in which festival attendees were able to log on the Anarchy festival at slamdance.com and watch a total of 21 short films for free. Digital films represented 29 percent of Slamdance 2000 submissions. sub-missions. Showing films on the internet is not a new idea. For the past few years, websurfers have been able to watch everything from concerts to porn films on their computer screens. But. as a glance around Park City's Main Street reveals, digital dig-ital video is just beginning to take off as an alternative to traditional mediums among independent filmmakers. film-makers. Dot com advertisements have been plastered on walls, lampposts lamp-posts and the sides of vans, and digital digi-tal cameras seem to outnumber their video counterparts at film festival press events and parties. As Jay Bogbanowitsch, a filmmaker film-maker who has a short film entered Internet-based film festival Digidancc, explains, the popularity of digital video is mostly a matter of economic access. 'It's making the playing field more level," he says. "It's giving opportunities to people who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford to create something." Citing festivals like Digidance, No Dance, Slamdunk and Slamdance's Anarchy, MovieMuker proclaims. "The revolution is here. Moviemaking is no longer the rich boys' game." According to Bogbanowitsch. the advantages of digital video are numerous. Equipment is cheaper, crews are smaller, shooting time is reduced, editing is easier, and a plethora of websites means distribution distribu-tion is widely available. Because of all this, many have been pointing to DV as a force for the democratization democratiza-tion of film. There are drawbacks, however. Chiefly, these consist of image and artistic quality compromises. " Using 35mm you get a better depth of field and better texture. With digital, the image is flatter, says Bogbanowitsch. Also a problem, according to Bogbanowitsch, is the fact that the market may soon be flooded with mediocre films. "A lot of people are going to think they are. filmmakers now and go out and do . - Please see Digital, A-2 BP Best of the Fest The Sundance Film Festival would like to say thank you to the residents of Park Chy by presenting "Best of the Fest in Park City" on Monday. Park City Director of Olympic-Planning Olympic-Planning Frank Bell says the Olympic transit system being devised by city and Salt Lake Organizing Committee planners plan-ners will keep vehicles away from Old Town, which is a marked contrast to Sundance when vehicles descend on Mam Street. Temporary satellite parking lots, which will be constructed in the area for the Olympics, will ini"rcpt motorists heading to Park City for Olympic events. Buses will then shuttle visitors into Park City. And. the city could ban traffic from some streets to reduce congestion. "1 think traffic will be somewhat easier eas-ier in town in some respects because we will have the ability to close some streets and we will have a more sophisticated transportation system." Bell said Bell predicts Olympic visitors will walk to their destinations, which is different dif-ferent than Sundance, when visitors usually usu-ally travel in a vehicle. The city hopes to create pedestrian links between Park City Mountain Resort. Main Street and Deer Valley Resort, which will draw spectators from the venues to the shops and restaurants on Main Street. "Sundance is unfortunately a very car-reliant event." he said.
