PIU MEADOWS Marketed by Steve Chin & Dcna Fleming Prudential Coleman RealEsun Model (435) 658-0400 (435) 647-8035 (800) 553-4666 Continued from A-10 advisor to John Daly, purchased a home at 309 South Temple before moving, in 1904 to 411 South Temple. " Eleven years and $300,000 later, the Walls transformed trans-formed that already lovely home into one of the grandest mansions in Salt Lake. For a time. 41 1 South Temple was the location of the Jewish Community Center. It is now the L.D.S. Business College. 529 South Temple is the palatial home of David Keith who came to Park City to help R.C. Chambers install the Cornish Pump at the Ontario mine. David Keith was a mentor to Tom Kearns and partner in the Silver King mine which made them all extremely wealthy. David Keith was President of the Silver King Coalition Mining Company, President of the Salt Lake Tribune and also owner of the Keith O'Brien building in Salt Lake City. In 1914, Ezra Thompson, Mayor of Salt Lake City, purchased pur-chased the home. Oddly enough, Ezra Thompson fought losing legal battles for many years against David Keith and other owners of the Silver King mine for stealing his ore in Woodside Gulch in Park City. He served two terms on the city council of Park City, and was for two terms, mayor of Salt Lake City. The Keith mansion continues its Park City connection. It now houses Terracor Land and Leucadia Financial, affiliated with the ownership of Park City Mountain Resort. The Governor's Mansion at 603 South Temple was the home of the Tom Kearns family of Silver King fame. Completed in 1902 according accord-ing to the designs of Carl Neuhauserr, the home contains "... 32 rooms, four baths, 10 fireplaces, an all-marble kitchen, and acres of parquet floors, hardwood wainscoting wain-scoting and an acre or so of lawn." The mansion also included a ballroom, ball-room, a bowling alley, an innovative innova-tive multi-headed shower closet and three vaults for jewels, silver and wine. In the winter, it took a ton of coal a day to heat the house. The Kearns Mansion was home to the family until 1937 when Jennie donated it to the State of Utah to serve as the Governor's residence. The Kearns family is also responsible for the Kearns Tribune building on South Main Street. - Across the street at 576 South Temple is another residence that was owned and occupied for many years by Mayor Ezra Thompson. Matthew Walker built the home at 610 South Temple. While the Walker Brothers were linked to the Emma Mine in Little Cottonwood Canyon, they also owned the Lowell mine, one of the early ones that dotted Silver Lake in upper Deer Valley. Their agent, Marcus Daly tried to interest them in the Ontario mine. When the Walker Brothers declined, he helped George Hearst acquire the claims that produced millions for the San Francisco investors. At 617 South Temple stands the charming home of Salt Lake's former for-mer alcoholic mayor, James Glendinning. When Glendinning identified with the Keystone mine just off of Keystone Run at ParkJ City Mountain Resort. . The! Bambergers later acquired consol- idated properties that became! United Park City Mines. j Though there are many more! homes in this area that have inter-J esting ties to Park City, we'll savej those for another day and look at just one more house at 678 South Temple, that of Emmanuel Kahn.j Emmanuel followed his brother.' Samuel to Utah where they werej among the first Jewish residents of j Utah. Their principal business wasi merchandising, but they also owned the Sampson mine in J Walker Webster gulch (on Webster j Run) at Park City Mountain Resort. The two brothers married J sisters, Fanny and Sarah Cohen PHOTO COURTESY OF UTAH HERITAGE FOUNDATION The Keith Mansion fell from political grace and lost the house to foreclosure, it was purchased by Henry Newell who, in the early days of Park City, had a slaughterhouse in Deer Valley and served on the Board of Directors of the Silver King Mining Company. Newell sold the property in 1919 to Wallace Bransford whose story is too long for this short tour. Look for the fascinating details in Judy Dykman's book about the Silver Queen. The next owner of house was Clarence... Bamberger, early and were contributing founders of. the B'nai Israel Temple in Salt . Lake City. Funny how all that money drift- ed away from Park City and is now . finding its' way back.
