Bill Witt: the passing of a true champion Bill Witt, an 18-year Park City resident, father, son, husband and teacher, died on Tuesday morning, Oct. 28, 1997, at his home, surrounded sur-rounded by people whom he loved, including his wife, Nancy, and his mother and father, Margaret and Howard. Bill will be remembered remem-bered not just by his family and friends, but by the kids he loved and inspired as their PE teacher at Treasure Mountain Middle School. His "everybody plays, everybody wins" attitude was infectious. The zest he had for life permeated his teaching as well as his day-to-day life. Bill had an uncanny ability to draw out the best in everyone, and even in his colleagues. His big-heartedness, his easygoing demeanor, and his sense of humor were infectious. Bill was always up for trying anything new life was a gift to enjoy. Gary Cole remembers when windsurfing wind-surfing became the new rage. Bill was one of the first to get involved with the sport. Talking his friends into a trip to Deer Creek Reservoir, Gary remembers with a laugh.as well as a tear, "I thought he was trying to drown me!" Whether it was biking through wine country, an afternoon of teaching Jr. Jazz basketball, or his four-year stint as the chairman of the board of the Hackney Court Olympiad, Bill worked hard, played hard, loved life with a passion, as much as he loved good food. He was part of the Cafe Terigo family. He worked for his own satisfaction, never looking at his tips or his paycheck. pay-check. It came down to his selflessness. His mother remembers that once in the clinic Bill saw a family who couldn't pay for medical services ser-vices for their child. He quietly told the receptionist to send the bill to him. Then there was a biker out of water, in a near-delirious state on a lonely California highway. Bill talked with him to make sure he was OK, and then sent him on his way giving him his own water bottle. bot-tle. Will Rogers once said, ''I never met a man I didnt like." He and Bill Witt would've agreed on that one. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, at noon in the gymnasium at Treasure Mountain Middle School, 2530 Kearns Blvd. All are welcome. wel-come. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Bill's name to the Scholarship Fund, Park City Education Foundation, P.O. Box 681422, Park City, Utah 84068. William Steven Witt died, Oct. 28, 1997, surrounded by family and friends at home in Park City. Bill was born Oct. 2, 1948 in Modesto, Calif., to Howard L. and Margaret Vanna Witt. He grew up in Sacramento and served in the U.S. Army's 267th Chemical Division. He coached and taught physical education in the Park City School District for 10 years, coaching coach-ing Little League, flag football, Jr. Jazz basketball, PCHS volleyball and TMMS intramurals. Bill loved teaching and his students loved his sense of fun and compassion. We will miss his quiet humor, selfless service and gentle presence. He was an avid skier, mountain biker and rollerblader, who also loved landscaping land-scaping and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; parents, Margaret and Howard of Sequim, Wash.; son, Kyle, Ft. Bragg, N.C.; stepchildren, Kimberly, Melissa, Ben, Jacob and Aaron Wartena. The family expresses deepest gratitude to Hospice and to the many dedicated physicians who cared for Bill during his illness.
