With their preliminary approval in hand, the partners plan to begin cutting roads this fall and to begin construction of the commercial part of the project next year. According to Wasatch County Planning Director Bob Mathis, the project will provide Wasatch County with some much-needed commercial tax revenue. "Yes, my office is enthused about the hotel. Marketplace Golden Sky Systems' DIRECTV is flying high Digital satellite TV system aims at area cable subscribers by Bruce Lewis OF THE RECORD STAFF Television viewers who want more channel selection than local broadcast stations now have a choice other than cable TV. They were known as Argos DIRECTV until last Monday. Now they're known as Golden Sky Systems DIRECTV. They're still the same people. "We are now a wholly-owned subsidiary," said Andy O'Pry, Jr., who manages sales and installations installa-tions for Summit and Morgan Counties. "We are offering the same service and same prices only the name has changed. O'Pry's operation is a DIRECTV franchise, offering digital programming, broadcast via satellite to a pizza-sized dish which is mounted on the home or in the yard. "We are aiming directly at the cable TV market," O'Pry said. "We will deliver a better signal, with less 'down time,' and at less cost than cable." As an example, O'Pry cited the "Total Choice" package for $29.99 per month, which includes more than 70 channels such as A&E, Cartoon Network, CNN, the Discovery Channel, ESPN and ESPN2, Fox News, MSNBC, TNT, the USA Network, WGN and others. A typical installation includes an 18-inch satellite receiving dish, a multi-function remote control and a set-top receiver. The satellite dish needs a clear line-of-sight shot to the satellite, and can be mounted on the rooftop, a wall, a chimney, or on a post in the yard. A cable runs from the dish to the set-top box. Purchasers can install the system sys-tem themselves, or O'Pry's crew can do the installation in about two hours. O'Pry advises do-it-yourselfers to plan on at least an entire afternoon to get the job done. "When we come in, we set up the dish and the receiver, run the wiring, check the system, and even hook it up to auxiliary devices such as a surround-sound 1 T: BRUCE LEWSPARK RECORD Andy O'Pry, Jr., operates the DIRECTV franchise in the Park City area: Golden Sky Systems. He says the 18-inch satellite dish offers better picture quality at a lower price than competing cable television services. system or your stereo," he said. Even though the signal which comes in through the dish is digital, digi-tal, O'Pry said that customers don't need a new digital television televi-sion to enjoy the improved picture pic-ture and sound. "It's true that you will get the best possible picture with a digital digi-tal television, but the receiver also converts the signal to analog so existing sets can use it," he said. Local Salt Lake City stations are not available via satellite, so either an external broadcast antenna or "lifeline" cable service ser-vice (which provides only local broadcast channels) can be used to view local programming. The viewer simply switches between the "A - B" selections on the set-top set-top receiver. O'Pry includes the cost of a broadcast antenna in his installation packages. Cables from other televisions in the home can be plugged into the receiver, allowing all sets in the home to receive a signal. One satellite channel at a time can be watched, or any of the broadcast stations. "Think of it like a VCR," O'Pry said. "If you want to watch something other than what's on the first VCR, then you need a second VCR." "For an additional one-time fee of $129, other televisions in the home can be equipped with receivers, which will allow them to tune to a satellite channel other than the one the main television tele-vision is receiving," O'Pry said. Golden Sky is currently running run-ning a special on purchase and installation of a DIRECTV system sys-tem for $249, he said. Most installations instal-lations are completed within two or three days of placing an order for service. Unlike other systems in which the customer pays a monthly fee for the dish and equipment, Golden Sky sells the equipment directly to the consumer for a one-time charge. The equipment can be relocated if the customer moves to a new home. O'Pry said that many new homes and condos are being prewired pre-wired for cable or satellite service, ser-vice, which makes installation easier. "In fact, we just made a deal with the 80-unit Winter Park at Sun Peak development. DIRECTV service will be prewired pre-wired and pre-installed, so new occupants will only need to start their subscription to have the service," ser-vice," he said. Golden Sky will be moving to new quarters at Kimball Junction as soon as construction is completed. com-pleted.
