Our casual, friendly environment & excellent food bring our customers back time and By Rick Brough RECORD QUEST WRITER Flirting With Dlsasttr 12 Starring Ben Stiller, Patricia Arquette and Tea Leoni Directed by David O. Russell Miramax, 1996 In the next entry in the Park City Film Series, Flirting With Disaster (playing June 1) David O. Russell has poured his quirki-ness quirki-ness into a more appealing formula. for-mula. His new mainstream film is like a '90s twist on a screwball comedy, starting on a tame note, with a blandly neurotic young couple. Ben Stiller is an adoptee obsessed with finding his birth Barents; his wife, played by atricia Arquette, is a new mother trying to get her husband interested in sex again. The couple begin a crosscountry cross-country trek that, step by step, becomes loonier by the mile. They're accompanied by an adoption-agency worker (Tea Leoni) who totes along her share of angst, plus a videocam to record the tender reunion. Finding a woman (Celia Weston) in San Diego, it isn't long before Stiller is bonding like crazy with her, comparing facial features and poring over family albums. One problem. Right after Stiller accidentally smashes her collection of glass animals, Leoni double-checks her data base. Sutherland Continued from B-1 at night It's one of the advantages of Los Angeles because it was designed to be a film center. One of the advantages of going on location loca-tion though we have 100 and some odd people peo-ple on our crew, most of them from Salt Lake and Los Angeles but everyone had to move up to Park City. So it's much more family-oriented atmosphere when everybody is living in the same hotel, going through the same things, everybody's laundry didn't get back the same day. I think it makes it a much nicer experience for everybody. PR: This is your third time directing. It is you first feature film. Mow do like directing and is it something you've always wanted to do? KS: Its really been an extension of what I love about acting, and that is telling a story. But more than being just part of telling the story directing has allowed me a little more control in how the story comes out I get to tell it how I want to as opposed to through somebody else's eyes. For me, itls something that I've always hoped to do. PR: How easy is it to shift back and forth time again. Open 7 days a week for dinner at 5:30. Next, they seek out a runty, wild-hair little redneck in Minnesota (David Patrick Kelly) who promptly punches Stiller out. Yes, he's the man who dropped off the baby all those years ago. No, he's not the father. Meanwhile, the trio is arrested arrest-ed for ramming a U.S. Post Office branch with a semi-truck. (Don't ask. It's kind of , involved.) This brings in a pair of BATF agents who turn out to be (a) a bisexual former high-school high-school boyfriend of Arquette 's played by Josh Brolin; and (b) a gruff older cop who is Brolin's partner, both on the force and in the bedroom (played by Richard Jenkins). Finally, they wind up in Arizona (with the gay cops in tow) and Stiller finally meets his real father (Alan Alda) and real mother (Lily Tomlin), a pair of ex-hippies who seemed to have aged gracefully into artsy eccentric eccen-tric Earthparents. Unfortunately, they're carrying too much baggage bag-gage from the Sixties way, way too much baggage, including a hallucinogenic home brew called "Windowpane." Russell wrote the strange tale, and as director turns his cast into a memorable collection of weirdos with Stiller and Arquette modestly and capably playing the quiet eye of the hurricane. hur-ricane. Tea Leoni has the potential of brings Hollywood to between acting and directing? KS: It's something I've been doing almost all of my adult life. The way I work is different from a lot of other actors. Itls much more technical. It's not as emotionally gut-wrenching as I guess some method actors might work, and that has helped me a great deal. The ability to go in and out of a character to be able to have the character char-acter working then be able to stop after a take and go back and have some judgement from my point of view is great. Itls never been a real difficult diffi-cult issue for me. PR: Do you see yourself moving into a new phase of your career? KS: I've always thought of each show a really being a new thing. I certainly never tried to put together a series of films that represent me. You do the work you can get, and you make of it what you can. I'm an actor and the films I would make would be story-oriented films driven by actors, I would always want to be a part of that (Directing) is just having a little more control over what the performances are like. PR: The character you play in this movie is described as a very intense, troubled man. Russell has a talent for naughty or tasteless moments like that, but here they're integrated inte-grated into the comedy. Just so you're warned: Flirting With Disaster is also about: visible male arousal, couples trying to balance oral sex with parenthood, parent-hood, techniques for coming down from an acid "high" and the erotic attraction of licking someone's armpit.. Flirting With Disaster plays at 8 pm., Saturday, June 1 in the Santy Auditorium. (That's in the Park City Library and. Education Center on Park Avenue.) Park City you describe him more? KS: Hels not very bright. This character is not a smart guy. There are six leads in the film and Vincent Gallo played the smarter one, and Mykelti (Williamson, Forest Gump) plays a very interesting character with a twist. My character his aggressiveness and his evilness come from ignorance as opposed to a purpose. He Is kind of funny to play. PR: What was one of your favorite things about Park City? KS: The people really. Kelly and I had a wonderful won-derful time there with our families before we started shooting. We'll probably go back for Christmas. But the people were really nice. At our hotels they were very pleasant and helpful The different ban around town were fun. Good Chinese food it was the only pace you could smoke and drink. It was just a nice place to be. PR: Last question. How could you lose your jacket playing pool? . , . KS: It was really late at night very late at night and nobody warned me (about him).
