Dec. 14 the Summit County Board of Commissioners voted on the last six of 15 amendment requests. Overall, the commissioners turned down almost all of the requested increases in density and significant land use changes. The six decisions are as follows: The Clissold Property, Old Ranch Road The Board of Commissioners voted to deny the applicant's request to move from Tier II to Tier I and change the allowable density on the owner's 240 acres of land from low to medium density. The Richard Clissold Investment Company had proposed developing 192 single- family lots on the property. The Jarman Property, Kimball Junction -- The commissioners denied the Jarmans' request to change the zoning of their property from medium densityresidential to community commercial and high-density residential. However, the commissioners encouraged the applicant to resubmit a specific plan for 30 acres of community commercial. Snyderville Basin Sewer Improvement District, Silver Creek -- The commission voted to correct an apparent oversight in the original map and to extend the Tier I boundary to include the sewer district's 32-acre parcel at Silver Creek. Francis Roberts Estate Property, Parley's Summit - The Commissioners voted to deny the applicant's request to change the zoning of its 46.S acres of property east of Summit Park from CriticalSensitive Lands to medium-density medium-density residential. Special Residential Land Use District, text amendment -- The commissioners voted 2 -1 to deny developerMike Milner's request to create a special high density land use district in cases when 100 percent of the proposed units meet affordable housing criteria. Commissioner Ron Perry cast the dissenting vote in favor of the amendment. Commissioners Gene Moser and Sheldon Richins voted to deny the request Parley's Knight Property, southwest of Jeremy Ranch The commissioners agreed to amend the Urban Growth Boundary to include both the applicant's property and the existing Southridge subdivision in Tier I. The applicant, however, withdrew his additional request for a zoning change from countryside to medium-density residential so there will be no change in the land use designation. The final decisions wrap'tip almost a year of public hearings and staff discussions before the Planning Commission and the Board of Commissioners. According to County Planner Lesley Burns the process went well and afforded the applicants a chance to have there individual projects studied "in a comprehensive manner." JJ Burns added the staff has already received five new applications 'for the next round of General Plan Amendment requests. At the same time, she added, if all the first round applicants follow through' on specific plan proposals, nas recommended by the Commission, "we will have a lot of work to do." Senior Companions help with things around the house or help solve problems or transport to the doctor, or just sit and visit Those who serve as Seme Companions receive several benefits. First is the satisfaction of serving others. Other benefits include an hourly stipend for those that qualify, mileage reimbursement and an annual physical. Senior Companions save the Federal Government a lot of money. It takes about $2,000 per month to take care of a person in a rest home. It only costs about $260 per month to fund a Senior Companion. The Senior Companion Program is in need of local donations to strengthen their transportation program. Basic funding comes from the Corporation for National Service, but local contributions .are necessary to meet travel needs. Except for routine track maintenance, there is not much call for the Gandy Dancer crew. Following a major winter snow storm, the Gandy Dancers must inspect every mile of track and clear snow drifts along the line. "Winter track maintenance is completely different from summer," said Ken McConnell, chairman, Heber Valley Historic Railroad Authority. "Of particular interest are the switches because they must be clean for the necessary switching procedures so the train can return to Heber City. It's not that the train., crews can't clear the switches', but it takes time and our passengers don't want to wait." So prior to each weekend and evening run, the Gandy Dancers, headed by Mark Rounds; manager of track maintenance, inspect the 22-mile track to ensure the snow is away from the vital parts of ;jhe track. ; An additional winter season challenge is the abundant wildlife that may feed near the tracks. "Every once in a while, a herd-of deer will run with the train along the track," said McConnell'."- The train is operating its'fifst winter season this year.
