The exhibition will be in the Salt Lake Art Center's Main Gallery from Sept. 2-Nov. 10. The Mexican revolution of 1920 encouraged a revival of interest in national art and culture. It was during this period, under the presidency of Alvaro Obregon, that many of Mexico's most distinguished artists were invited to decorate the walls of public buildings with murals. The first buildings included the Secretaria de Educacion, the Escuela National Preparatoria, and the Escuela de Agricultura in Chapingo. With themes that included natural history, pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures, and concepts associated with Utopian ideologies, artists like Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco initiated what has come to be called the Mexican Renaissance. The Salt lake Art Center is pleased to be able to present an exhibition of 60 works by the artists that initiated the Mexican Renaissance, and artists from two subsequent generations on whom they had such a tremendous influence. In addition to the individuals mentioned above, the exhibition includes works by Rufino Tamayo, Pablo O'Higgins (born in Salt Lake City), Leonora Carrington and others. A third generation artist, Raul Anguaina, writes, 'The artists of my generauon...work with a free spirit, moving away from the overwhelming influence of the 'Big Three' creating individual styles in a broad gamut of forms, colors and aesthetic orientation. Nonetheless, I insist that in the works of my generation as well as in those of the more important of the . succeeding generations one can detect an unmistakable Mexican style: the heavy monumental forms and the solid geometric structure of the composition. Even in the works of the abstract painters, we can observe colors, geometry and a formal sense that distinguish them from the works of other countries." A public reception will be held at the Salt Lake Art Center, 20 So. West Temple, on Friday, Sept. 16, from 7-9 p.m. The art center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 1-5 p.m. It is closed on Mondays and holidays. Beyond the Population Bomb: For years many experts said solving the world's most pressing problems-hunger, poverty, environmental degradation, overcrowding-could only be accomplished by strict programs to control global population. Now, as leaders from around the world gather this September in Cairo, three teams of award-winning producers examine the debate around a central issue of our time, population. "Beyond the Population Bomb" will air Sept. 6-8 6-8 from 6-7 p.m. The series will be hosted by Living on Earth executive producer Steve Curwood. Friday Edition: KUER news will examine the effects of population growth in Utah during "Friday Edition," the station's weekly newsmagazine. The program will focus on the cultural, environmental and economic aspects of growth and how Utahns are, or are not, reacting to it. "Friday Edition" airs on KUER every Friday at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Soundwaves: "Soundwaves," a program designed to introduce young people to classical music, returns to the airwaves on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 11:10 a.m. The program, hosted by Gene Pack, features musical selections identified by the Utah State Core Curriculum for Kindergarten through sixth grade. Jordanelle Dam is a great Labor Day getaway If you're tired of the same crowds at your favorite camping spot and are looking for a new experience Labor Day weekend, Jordanelle State Park may have the perfect way to close out the summer with a memorable camping experience. The park's Rock Cliff Recreation Site, east of the new Jordanelle Reservoir, offers a 50-unit, walk-in campground nestled amid cottonwood trees and willows along the Provo River. "You can pitch your tent amidst the shade and solitude and listen to the sounds of nature-the flowing river, plentiful bird life and an occasional deer wandering through," said Park Ranger Lotti Wann. Sites are accessible by foot, with five Americans With Disabilities-approved Disabilities-approved sites accessible to wheelchairs. All sites offer a tent pad, picnic table and barbecue grill. Rest room facilities include flush toilets and hot showers. Sites can beireserved by calling 783-3030, Wann said. Sites not reserved are available on a first come, first serve .basis. Camping fees are $9 Sunday through Thursday and $10 Fridays, Saturdays and holidays. Carts to haul camping gear to the sites can be rented for $2 at the area's entrance station. In addition to camping, Rock Cliffs new Nature Center features a variety of exhibits and displays focusing on the surrounding riparian and wetlands areas. The Nature Center is open daily, from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. "A series of boardwalks and nature trails enable visitors to experience the Provo River's ecology with little disruption of the natural environment," Wann said of the unique way people access the area. "The focus of the Rock Cliff area is to preserve and protect the beautiful corridor along the Provo River with as little alteration and negative impact as possible." For those interested in fishing, the Provo River is open to angling with artificial lures and flies only. Jordanelle Reservoir remains closed to all recreation, including fishing and boating. The Rock Cliff area can be reached from Highway 32, two miles west of Francis. "Due to the area's abundant wildlife, we ask people to please leave their dogs at home," Wann said.
