Show Page B8 D Thursday, July 7, 1994 The Park Record D Section B Blues, Jazz The Utah Jazz and Blues Festival, sponsored by KRCL, KUED, and KUER, returns to Snowbird July 29 & 30 for its seventh year of music in the mountains with headliners Sonny Rollins and Koko Taylor. Friday evening's performance begins at 6:00 p.m. and Includes America's favorite female blues singer, Koko Taylor. The "Queen of the Blues" has been singing the blues for over 30 years and just released her newest album, "Force of Nature." Elvin Bishop, the master of good times blues and rock will let loose with his trademark slide guitar. In 1989, "his brand of house-rockin music had 'em dancing in the aisles all night long." (The Salt Lake Tribune) Chicago-style blues combined with bayou funk and rock'n'roll are all part of Lonnie Brooks' roof-raising roof-raising live performances that make him popular at blues clubs around the world. Lonnie's newest recording for Alligator Records is "Satisfaction Guaranteed." Utah's own Rayband will return to open the evening's performance. Festival Symphony presents "Mozart in the Mountains" Sloping hills, evergreens and wild flowers provide the perfect backdrop for the opening performance of the Utah Symphony's Snowbird classics Series, Sunday, July 10. Utah Symphony Associate Conductor Robert Henderson will lead the Symphony and guest pianist Angela cheng in the Local groups featured in Red Butte summer concert series The "Gospel Beats!" concert at Red Butte Garden will feature the New Generation of Gospel and The Utah Travelers Gospel Singers in a combined evening of music and celebration on Sunday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $6. The New Generation of Gospel was formed in 1990 by group member James Morris. His mission was to "capture the minds and the spiritual soul to give inspiration, understanding, and broaden the range of gospel music to the young people of today, who are the 'new generation.'" New Generation has a new recording titled, Out of the Land ofZion. The Utah Travelers Gospel Singers were founded in 1966 from two groups who had sung together in the 1950s. These two groups joined to "sing the music they had grown up singing the music of praise to God." Sonny Rollins began his career in the late '40's when he was recording with Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and Clifford Brown. His improvisational skills are legendary with many considering him to be the greatest jazz saxophonist of his generation. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to hear one of America's greatest living jazz musicians. Gene Harris is, without a doubt Utah's favorite Jazz artist, never fails to win a standing ovation with his soulful, energetic performances. Harris has been playing piano jazz and blues since he taught himself to play boogie-woogie piano as a kid. An internationally acclaimed pianist, Harris has been referred to by the London Times as "one of the world's most exciting blues-based blues-based pianists." Harris will perform with his quartet which produced their first live recorded performance last July at Ste. Chapelle Winery in Idaho. Salt Lake jazz enthusiasts will have an opportunity to hear the Underpaid Professors, who play everything from Chick Corea to the own compositions at local jazz clubs and the downtown Brown Bag Series. One of last year's crowd performance of "Mozart & More In The Mountains," a collection of classic Mozart works including symphony No. 39 and Piano Concerto No. 17. Hayden's Symphony No. 59, "Fire," will also be performed. Born in Hong Kong, Cheng immigrated to Canada at age 12. gospel ensemble and was awarded the 1991 Utah Governor's Cultural Heritage Award. Both groups are active in the community giving presentations at schools on gospel music and Black history. Join the Garden in welcoming these two fine local performing groups and enjoy the traditional gospel music in the pristine outdoor amphitheater at Red Butte Garden. Patrons are invited to bring picnics and blankets to sit on the amphitheater lawn. Free parking is available in expanded lots adjacent to the garden. There is no shuttle service this year. In 1986, she won a Gold Medal in the Artur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. Two years later, she became the first Canadian to win the prestigious Montreal International Music Competition. Cheng received the Canada Council's Career Development Grant in 1988, recognizing her as one of today's most important artists. She has captured first prize in the Mae M. Whitaker International Competition, the University of Maryland International Piano Competition, and most recently, the Palm Beach International Piano Competition.
