Montgomery, president of the Utah Ski Association, has been named executive director of the Utah Sports Authority. Montgomery emerged from a list of ten finalists that were interviewed Oct. 14 by Sports Authority members. "Randy's combination of experience in sports and recreation marketing, management skills and his knowledge of this market are just what we were looking for," stated Randy Dryer, chairman of the Utah Sports Authority. "His track record with the Utah Ski Association made him a very strong candidate. We were very happy with the quality applicants. Randy went up against top notch competitors from across the United States." As president of Ski Utah and the Utah Ski Association, Montgomery was responsible for collaborative efforts marketing Utah as a ski destination. He led marketing, planning, research, budget and fund-raising efforts along with managerial responsibilities. Montgomery graduated from the University of Utah in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. His career has included management and marketing positions with Snowbird, Markctshare, Inc., and the Resort CenterWasatch Management Company. The move to hire an executive director comes as activities of the Sports Authority are increasing. Utah's Winter Sports Park has completed a record-breaking season of winter operation and is wrapping up its first warm-wcathcr warm-wcathcr season. Construction will Maybe it's time for the potato chip dance? When I was growing up on the coast of northern New England, whenever a drought of surf got really interminable, we would be forced to do the Potato Chip Dance. The dance went like this: you'd take a bag of chips and spread them around on some high point facing the water, in Hampton, N.H. that meant the top of the seawall. Then, while dancing on the chips barefoot, you had to visualize perfect waves and conditions while verbalizing praise to Kahuna, the god of surf, or above him to Mother Ocean. For really bad spells, we'd hike to the summit of some mountain in New Hampshire, to get as much altitude as possible, and faced southeast toward the coast, while going above Kahuna and Mother Ocean all the way to Mother Nature herself. It was for emergency use only; a month of no waves, minimum. No matter what the non-believers non-believers may think, it worked. And as modern physics teaches us, there's no such thing as coincidence. So here it is November and someone forgot to turn on the winter machine. I'm not talking snow guns here; they've been on at both Park City and Deer Valley already. I mean the full-on full-on cold weather, blustery winds, powder-dumpin' powder-dumpin' machine. I know just a few weeks ago I was lamenting the early passing of summer. That was back when the cold weather faked us out by setting in weeks ahead of schedule. That was back when Jack Frost sent the Park City High School Homecoming a nice present of several inches of snow on Oct. 8. 1 wasn't ready then but I sure am now. At this time last year we were skiing. I don't want to denigrate Brian Strait and all the guys at Team Naga who do some amazing things with water and air when the nights get cold enough, but I want the real thing. I want that 4 Utah "Greatest Snow On Earth" stuff. I don't need the lifts yet, but I need that snow. And I'm selfish: I want it now. Someone said to me on that cold, snowy Homecoming day that the surest sign of a light winter was an early snowfall. I told him he was nuts, that we were racing headlong into a powder junkies' dream season. But inside I was secretly fearing that my doomsaying friend might have been right. I'm really fearing that now. Maybe if you just ignore that October snowfall, we're actually starting late which, by the other guy's logic, would indicate a humongous winter just around the corner. But just to make sure, I've bought a big bag of Ruffles and will be headed to the top of Jupiter Peak soon, positive thoughts in mind. I'll be looking toward the Northwest and the Gulf of Alaska, praying for waves in the upper air flow rather than the ocean to gei here soon. Real soon, please? begin on the bobsledluge facility at the Winter Sports Park next spring. Work, planning and development continue for skating facilities in Ogdcn and Salt Lake. Two-hundred seventy-nine applications were received for the position including those of 16 attorneys, three Ph.Ds, and 103 with masters degrees. Whenever We Make This Incredible Home Equity Line Offer, Some People Watch, DV lifts to be ready by Dec. 4 continued from C1 complete. The Northside Express is scheduled for a load test on Nov. 30 with the Snowfiake Chair being tested sometime around the 26th. The builders of the lift are very optimistic about making the target date. Says English, "At this point, five weeks from now we should be open."
