Show The Park Record D Section C Thursday, September 1 0, 1992 O Page C3 Ringo's Utah show is saved by his hot band by RON GEORG Record staff writer . Ringo Starr finally made it to Utah, after nearly three decades of touring the world. And what we learned from his visit is what folks have often speculated-Ringo was the Beatles's dim bulb. Fortunately, the former Beatle still has some muscle in the music industry, and he managed to assemble an excellent group of musicians, the All-Starr Band. These talented, classic rockers saved Ringo from himself. Most notably, The Guess Who's Burton Cummings provided some hot entertainment. In fact, the keyboardist lifted his hits out of the realm of classic rock, offering some vital rock and roll. The show's first really hot action came early, as Cummings powered though "No Time," backed by the potent guitar work of Nils Lofgren, Dave Edmunds, and Joe Walsh. The Guess Who's fuzz-guitar sound proved perfect for the band. Cummings was also hot on "Undun"-- which featured his pretty flute stylings. And one . of the top hits of the evening had to be "American Woman," which allowed Lofgren some hot licks. Joe Walsh was also in top form, punctuating his stage antics with some of the best guitar work around. In fact, I went into the show wondering if I could stand to hear "Rocky Mountain Way" (or "American Woman," for that matter) one more time. Walsh answered the question with his piercing guitar. He also updated the tune, changing one lyric to: "The bases are loaded and Quayle's at batTime to change the batter." That was also a promotional line-Walsh is currently running a campaign for Vice-president. He used his time on stage to publicly challenge Dan Quayle and Al Gore to a debate, which he promised to win handily. Dave Edmunds has often operated behind the scenes as a rock and roll producer-except for his stint with Rockpile-but he took center stage for this one. His most impressive offering was a beautiful, instrumental version of. the Beatles' "Lady Madonna." Of course, Ringo was there as well. Mostly he spent his time beating on the drums, which wasn't nearly as interesting as the work presented by his co-drummer, son Zach Starkey. That would have been all right, but Ringo also assumed the role of frontman occasionally, and that was a disaster. Ringo is goofy, and not in a good way. He never was much of a singer, and his crowd rapport is more ringmaster than rock and roller. I went to the concert looking forward to hearing some Beatles tunes, but I came away . sorry to have heard "With a Little Help from My Friends" so badly slaughtered (by Ringo, not the band). And I didn't need to hear "Yellow Submarine" at all (the band also looked a little edgy as Ringo hammed it up during the cartoonish tune.) While this was an excellent night of music, Ringo only gets credit as organizer. As a performer, he's better off staying behind his drum kit and keeping quiet Park City Billiards to hold tournament for Parkites Park City Billiards is opening it's doors to league playing once again this fall.
