Show Park Record Thursday, April 25, 1991 Page B3 Masters swimmers benefit from experience of record-holding record-holding coach, Sara Shand j New Masters coach Sara Shand has a wealth of knowledge to share vith the Park City Aquatic Masters Swim Team. i Shand, 26, was a finalist in the 1988 Olympic Trials, and has competed in the World Games and Pan Am Games. Holder of five world and 10 national Masters swimming records, she recently moved to Park City from Walnut Creek, Calif. ,- "She's, had the best coaches in the Country as her coaches," says Gail Meakins, head of the aquatic programs pro-grams at the Park City . Racquet Club. "We're really benefiting from (hat exposure." ; Shand leads nine Masters practices prac-tices a week (noon-l:30 M-F and 5-6:45 p.m. M-Th), all of which are open to the public. Meakins, a top Masters swimmer herself, says the Workouts "are very varied, interesting in-teresting workouts. She works with hand paddles, kick boards and pull buoys, and really breaks it up so it's not boring." f A swimmer need not be an expert to do one of Shand's workouts. Meakins says they're fine for people who just want to get in shape. The only requirement is that a swimmer be able to swim freestyle with his face in the water. But if an adult swimmer wants to try competing or to return to competition com-petition again, the chance to compete com-pete is available through the program. pro-gram. "If they've even thought about competing in swimming again, people do do it," Meakins says. Park City Aquatic Masters sure do it. Park City will send a team to several major Masters meets this summer, including a meet May 4 in Logan and a long-course (50-meter pool) meet June 8 at Cottonwood Heights. And Park City will host the Metro Region Qualifying Meet for the Utah Winter Games June 14-15. A Masters workout at the racquet club costs $2.25 for locals, $4.50 for non-locals. After a two-week trial period, swimmers are also asked to pay the $30 annual Masters dues. (The racquet club offers a host of "frequent-swimmer" deals for Vtf T f t Sara Shand recently took over Park City's rapidly expanding expan-ding Masters swimming program. She leads eight Masters swim practices each week at the Park City Racquet Club. regular swimmers.) Shand will also lead a stroke-technique stroke-technique clinic for Masters at 10 a.m. April 27. Cost is $8. Shand's knowledge of stroke techniques has helped Meakins' own swimming immensely. "Since ShandJ's come, in one event I've dropped three seconds toff my time, Meakins said. "I went lifetime-best times in three events... I think it's just stroke techniques." t'';?v-'' " " ' "' " " m S v fa - . Pocatello added some late-match scores and prevailed 25-0. The Muckers, meanwhile opened against the Jackson Hole Moose, a new team in the area. In the clubs' inaugural meeting, the Moosemen took a close 14-0 victory. Both teams played close to the vest. Some fine kicking by the Moose fly-half proved to be more than the Park City back line could handle, keeping the Muckers pinned deep in their own half. A missed tackle and a bad bounce of the ball proved the Muckers' undoing. ' In the second match Park City played Utah State. This time Park City scored first as scrum-half Blackie Joenns finished off a fine movement by the Mucker pack and scored the Muckers' first try of the tournament. The Muckers missed the conversion however, and held a slim 4-0 halftime lead. The second half started off well for the Muckers as Billy Reed took the ball to the Aggies' two-meter line. Unfortunately for the Muckers, that was as close as they would get to scoring during the rest of the match. Once again, a missed tackle led to an opponent's score. The Aggie fullback came into the line and tightroped his way down the sideline to score from about 40 meters out. The conversion was good and Utah State led 6-4. In the closing seconds Utah State's centers hooked up on a photos by Nils Rahm fine movement and scored again to make the final 12-4. In the day's final match, Park City played Boise and came away with a 9-4 win. Cory Hyham started the scoring with a pretty 40-meter run. The conversion was made by Sonny Sundquist, giving Park City a 6-0 lead. Boise came right back and scored off a five-meter scrum, as the Fighting Flamingo lock scooped up a loose ball at about the two-meter line and touched down in the corner. Boise missed the conversion and trailed 6-4. Park City came right baack. The Muckers took advantage of a Boise penalty to score a drop goal again by Sonny Sundquist from about 25 meters out. The Muckers led 9-4. The half and the match ended with no further scoring. Park City's season record, including in-cluding a pair of early-season matches, mat-ches, now stands at 3-2. The Mucker roster for the tourney was as follows: (props) Judd Hill, Peter Quinn; (hooker) Matt Lam-phier; Lam-phier; (locks) Brian LaFrainier, Keith Klapach, Rick Reily ; (breaks) Bill Reed, Bill Magnetti; (no. 8) Brad Boozier; (halfback) Blackie Joenns; (fly half) Steve Creer captain; cap-tain; (center) Kent Botham, Cory Hyham, Chris Fellows; (wings) Eric Poole, Dave Wilcox rookie; (fullback) Sonny Sundquist.
