"I think they played real good," Miner coach Ed Mulick said after the match. "They were playing together as a team; they were relaxed relax-ed and having fun." The Miners jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the first game. But Gunnison Gun-nison won five straight points to go ahead 7-5. After the Miners came back to take an 8-7 lead, Park City senior Karen Higman served three straight winners, and the Miners led 11-7. Moments later, with junior Katie Coletti serving, the Miners ran off four straight points to take the first game. Senior Anji Buckner hit a spike that landed just inside the line to win one point. And junior Rebekka Hall used a roundhouse swing to nail the ball into the rear corner on the Gunnison side, earning another point for Park City. The Miners cruised to a 15-10 win. The Miners trailed 2-0 early in the second game, before Hall served three consecutive winners (no returns) for Park City. Hall came up big later in the game. With the Miners up 7-3, she served, then took a pass and hit a winner to widen the Miner advantage. advan-tage. ; v.'' . v Linda Stover dropped a serve right over the net to put Park City Up 11-4. Buckner powered an underhand shot from the back of the court for the Miners 12th point. - Coletti and Hall combined for a "double in-your-face rejection" of a Gunnison shot for a 13-7 advantage. Then a spike by Buckner ticked the net and dropped in. The Miners won handily, 15-7. On Sept. 23 the Miners traveled to a tournament in Wyoming. The team bus left at 6 a.m., just a few hours after the completion of the school's homecoming dance. Both the j.v. and varsity var-sity teams played four matches, some against teams from larger 3A schools. They stayed close in most of their matches. In one match Park City met Morgan, the defending Utah 2A champs. The Miners took Morgan to three games before losing. Mulick was happy with the result. "To stick with them and go three games, I think our girls felt pretty good," he said. . Mulick assumed head coaching duties two weeks ago, shortly after the departure of previous coach Dot-tie Dot-tie Licciardi. He said the team is getting get-ting used to the change. -'.'Now we can really learn, really begin to improve." im-prove." The Miners travel to Juab Sept. 27.
