ACLU attourney Sheila Mawkes called the no-clowns rule "an egregious violation of the precedent set in Milky vs. United Dairy Producers, Pro-ducers, in which the judge said no person shall be denied access to recreational facilities on the basis of make-up, clothing or demeanor." Mawkes pointed out that recent court cases have opened doors previously closed to clowns. "We've now got clowns in the White House and clowns on Wall Street," she said. The Park City rule, she said, is "a step backwards." . Park City Director PhilJones said the ski area has nothing against clowns. "Some of my best friends are clowns," he said. Jones said that the Park City Ski Area is a privately owned business and, as such, has the right to ban clowns. "They can ski at ParkWest," he said. "We just don't want them on our mountain. " , Asked how he spotted clowns, t Jones said he looks for "A lot of makeup more than a lot, I mean a , huge amount." He said another giveaway is "silly one-piece suits usually with ruffles and polka dots." He can also spot clowns by their facial expressions. "No one smiles all the time," he said. "They make me sick." Vice-President Dan Quayle took a rare pro-ACLU stand by opposing the Park City rule. "I learned about the no-clowns rule during the Senator's Cup last winter," he said. "I was personally hurt and offended bytherule." Most skiers at Park City appeared : to favor ending the no-clowns rule. "The superheros are worse then the clowns, and Park City lets them ski," one tourist pointed out. "The clowns have it hard enough already," another said. "Clowns, mascots, gorillas, superheros it's all the same to : me," a young girl said sadly. "Everyone should be treated the same."
