Show Park Record Thursday, September 14, 1989 Page B3 Dottie Licciardi's volleyball team keeps getting better by ALEX WELLS Record staff writer Last week I gave the Park City High School volleyball coach, Dottie Licciardi, a fictional name. My apologies. Everything else in the story was true. The girls are improving, learning learn-ing and winning some games. Licciardi, Lic-ciardi, by any name, is still a good coach. Last Thursday the Miners lost a close match at home against North Sanpete. In the first game Alexa Perotti served several winners as Park City took an 8-4 lead. Rebecca Hall spiked the ball to win one point, then made a block to win the next, and the Miners led 9-5. With Sunshine Sun-shine Caulfield serving, a spike by Carrie Lewis gave Park City a 12-10 lead. Then Park City went cold. North Sanpete fought off a match point at 14-11, then won five straight points to take a 16-14 victory. Licciardi said inexperience hurt the Miners. "We need more game experience," she said. "Being able to have a lead and keep a lead.. .comes with more game experience." ex-perience." In the second game, strong serving serv-ing by Rebekka Hall and Kerry Lewis helped the Miners to a 14-7 lead. Then the Miners faltered for a few moments. Park City hit a serve into the net. A North Sanpete serve dropped between two Miners. A spike into the net followed, then a shot off the roof. North Sanpete trailed trail-ed by four. But the Miners kept their cool this time, winning two more points and the match, 15-10. North Sanpete jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third game. "We got on the court kind of flat," Licciardi said. Park City narrowed the margin to 8-7. But a series of strong serves helped North Sanpete to another big lead. They won the game, 15-10, and the match, two games to one. In spite of the loss, Coach Licciardi Licciar-di liked the play of her team. "In terms of improvement that was one of the best games we've played... we never gave up... I feel that if the girls keep playing like they've been playing play-ing we're going to get a couple wins." Licciardi named seniors Sunshine Caulfield and Kerry Lewis team captains this week. She said that the match against North Sanpete was "the most outstanding game for Sunshine." Sun-shine." The Miners play Thursday, September 14 at Gunnison. Last year the team finished third in the state in the 1-A 2-A division. "We hope to do as well or possibly better this year," coach Maggie Carley said. "We did not lose any starters from last year's team. This year's team has eight seniors, five of whom play in the team's top 10 positions. (Three singles players and two doubles teams play in the matches.) Carley is considering moving most of her seniors to doubles. "Because those girls have been playing all four years, playing predominently singles, we're going to try them in doubles." The team won its first two matches mat-ches easily. Against Morgan, the three singles players (Jessie Whitesides, Andrea Ruzicka, and Kourtney Holliday) won in straight sets. The first doubles team of Jennifer Jen-nifer Putz and Jennifer Traeger won 6-1, 6-1. The second doubles team, t . f i i Mi -am nirrTTT V .1 ...2 ' - it.ltMJUmHW'"'" . I .1 IS 7 ...... ' T- d. Misha Bradford and Brooke Coleman, Col-eman, dropped a three-set decision 6-2,6-7, 6-4. Coach Carley used a different lineup last Wednesday against South Summit, but with similar results. The Miners dropped just three games in winning all five matches from the Wildcats. Jennifer Vance, Krista Steinke, and Andrea Ruzicka won easily in singles for the Miners. The doubles teams (Heather Circo and Ady Morrison; Hilary Felton and Jessie Whitesides) won their matches without losing a game. Carley says Grantsville and Rowland Hall will be the toughest matches for her team this year. (The high school tennis team plays at home on Wednesday, September 20 against Grantsville and St. Joseph.)
