Without a doubt, the famous detective detec-tive Sherlock Holmes and his faithful sidekick Dr. Watson are two of the best known characters in mystery and detective fiction. Originally created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), Sherlock Holmes detective stories have long been popular with young and old alike. One of the main reasons for their long-standing popularity lies in Conan Doyle's development of the two principal characters and their unique relationship with each other. Holmes is an extraordinary detective detec-tive who plys his trade by making use of his incredibly sharp powers of observation. His talent is demonstrated repeatedly as he unscrambles clues to solve a mystery and bring a malefactor to justice. On the other hand, Dr. Watson Wat-son is not the thinking machine that Holmes is and provides the perfect complement to Holmes's rather cut and dry and perhaps eccentric way of dealing with cases. In all of Conan Doyle's stories, Dr. Watson's emotional emo-tional involvement with each case is as important to working out a solution solu-tion as Holmes's deductions. Many authors have continued the saga of Holmes and Watson recently, one new writer has peared on the literary scene and merits the reader's attention. Lillian Bethel Greenwood (L.B. Greenwood) Green-wood) in 1986 wrote the first of what, one hopes, will become a long series of Sherlock Holmes novels with her "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Raleigh Legacy" (Atheneum, 1986). In this, her first novel, Greenwood Green-wood admirably resurrects the team of Holmes and Watson as they are presented with a tough puzzle to solve: a mysterious unsigned and virtually indecipherable letter has been passed on to Aleck Raleigh, a college friend of Watson's, a legacy which conceals a strange tale of family secrets and lost treasure. Greenwood's most important achievement in her work, aside from telling a good story, is that she evokes the atmostphere of Victorian England of the 1880's and admirably deals with the intricate interplay between the brilliant Holmes and the plodding but lovable Watson. 'r Many people think "the day the music died," the day Buddy Holly's plane crashed, was the end of "The Crickets." Actually, Holly had left the band a year before, and The Crickets have continued playing to this day. They will be at Steeps Jan. 13. While there were some shakeups, drummer J.I. Allison and bassist Joe B. Mauldin faced some tough times during the British Invasion of the Sixties, but they made it through by hooking up with the Everly Brothers, or, at other times, with Waylon Jennings, among others. The Crickets The Crickets have just produced an album, called "T-shirt," which is said to be a pop commentary on the 80's. Considering these rock-a-billy greats were at the roots of pop music, they are certainly qualified to make the commentary. Rounding out the trio will be Gordon Gor-don Payne. Payne joined the band three years ago. His introduction to Allison came through J.J. Cale, with whom Payne has played. While the band's show is only about 35 new music, manager Will Byrd says the music is still original Crickets work. According to Byrd, Allison wrote much of the music which made The Crickets famous. Allison was writing with Holly when they came up with classic tunes such as, "Well alright," "Maybe Baby," and "It Don't Matter Mat-ter Anymore." In fact, the famous Crickets's hit, "Peggy Sue" was named after Allison's then current girlfriend. While they couple later broke up after a few years of marriage, Peggy Sue will always have a musical legacy to her past romance. The Pleazers, a modern dance band which plays Park City often, will open for The Crickets at Steeps. The show will start at 9:30. v n TASS ALONG AN HEIRLOOM MORE VALUABLE THAN GOLD. Life. MILLER SUBARU 5680 SOUTH STATE IN MURRAY 262-2661 second novel, "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of Sabina Hall" (Simon and Schuster, 1988), Holmes and Watson are called to the remote and dismal Sabina Hall in the middle of nowhere in Somerset, only to find that someone so-meone has poisoned a miserly old man. The cast of characters reads like something right out of Cohan Doyle's stories: a smug spinster sister-in-law, her penniless companion, compa-nion, and a number of suspicious servants. Everyone at the Hall has a murky past as the plot thickens and the two detectives find themselves embroiled in a very deep and puzzling puzzl-ing case. Greenwood's plots have the feel of the "real McCoy," and she has succeeded unequivocably in recreating England's most famous team of detectives. At present, she is working on her third Holmes novel. If it is as good as her first two, it should firmly establish L.B. Greenwood Green-wood as the accepted successor to Sir Arthur Conon Doyle. As Holmes would put it, "Elementary, my dear Watson." Armed with some sort of official book of trivial stuff, Bruce Margolis told us Cher's first film was called "Chastity," not "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Jim-my Dean," as we thought. He also knew that George Burns's real name is Nathan Birnbaum, and that La Bama was based on Richie Valens's life.
