Show Page A4 Thursday, December 22, 1988 Park Record Last minute ideas by TERIORR Record editor So, you're down to the wire and you're stumped on what to give folks for the holidays that would be different. dif-ferent. Maybe you should think of. alternative gift-giving a donation you make in someone else's name that provides something needed for a charity. There are professional groups like Planned Parenthood where if donate they will send a letter to a person you designate and tell them a certain cer-tain amount has been donated in their name. Then there are various church groups and shelters where you make the donation and write a note to your friends telling them. On the local front depending upon your budget there are a number of places you donate and give at the same time. At the Kimball Art Center a $10 doantion would buy refreshments for an opening, $40 would pay for a flyer announcing upcoming up-coming events and $100 would pay for a teacher and supplies for a children's art class. The Park City Handicapped Ski Association would put $10 toward sponsoring a Special Olympian, $40 would buy four weeks of ski lessons, $60 would pay for six weeks of ski lessons and $100 would send a skier to the national races. For $150 you could buy a set of outrigger skis. At the Egyptian Theatre, $10 would buy you a ticket to a performance perfor-mance and refreshments, $40 would get you season tickets, and $100 would include someone as a fist nighter for the rest of the season. And finally, at KPCW, the community com-munity radio station, $10 would purchase pur-chase a new compact disc, $40 would buy coffee for the volunteers for one month, $60 would buy tape for 10 newscasts and $100 would pay the transmitter bill for a month. ?. These are a few places where your gift could give twice. Be creative and check with your favorite charity on what different and meaningful gift you could give this season. Happy Holidays! "Life of the party" I 2 PHASEll CLOSEOUT PRICES ' IN EFFECT by CARRIE COX Record guest writer Sometimes the life of the party is in your hands. Make someone a designated driver before the party starts. Select one person out of your group (volunteers are appreciated) to provide transportation. This persons per-sons refrains from drinking alcohol or using any other intoxicating substances. This preventive measure can be carried out whether at a bar, restaurant or private party. If the gathering is a private party, pay special attention to that "dry" driver to make them feel welcome, and have soft drinks and possibly mock-cocktails available for their enjoyment. Mock-cocktails are nonalcoholic beverages that offer an alternative to, or a change-of-pace from traditional alcoholic drinks. Many bars and restaurants are offering of-fering non-alcoholic drinks free of charge to designated drivers or have extended their beverage mend to include in-clude alcohol-free' and low-alcohol beverages. In addition to this, bar and restaurant employees who serve alcoholic beverages are required by law to attend a Server Training. Jim Peters, president of Responsible Responsi-ble Hospitality Institute, has trained the staff of Mountain Community Health Choices to conduct these trainings in our area. The trainings cover information about legal responsibilities of serving alcohol, liquor li-quor licensing Utah regulatory laws, behavorial cues for recognizing recogniz-ing intoxication, signs of underage drinkers, dram shop law, and intervention in-tervention techniques which include offering food to the drinker. The Utah Division of Highway Safety advises ad-vises that "high protein foods such as meat or cheese not only enhance the enjoyment of a beverage but also help moderate the effects of alcohol." An intervention technique we all can utilize is to encourage patrons or friends who have had enough to drink to take an alternative mode of transportation home. Suggest a taxi, the free town bus service or ask them to let you or a friend take them home. No matter what, do not let them drive. It may save a life. Remember that you could be held legally responsible for what a drunk driver does. The Dram Shop Iaw is of concern to anyone who serves or sells alcoholic beverages "(this includes in-cludes private party hosts or hostesses.) In general, the Dram Shop Law allows injured persons to receive damages from anyone who sells or provides alcoholic beverages which cause intoxication. It seems we all should have an interest in promoting responsible drinking sobering advice ad-vice can save a life.
