Show Page A10 Thursday, December 8, 1988 Park Record Representative sees education inequity by RON GEORG Record staff writer Utah State Representative Glenn Brown and Utah State Senator Alyrick Myrin came to Park City to talk at League of Women Voter's luncheon, and Brown had a "somewhat unpopular message for the Park City School District. When Park City Board of Education Educa-tion member Lindy Blackbourn asked ask-ed Brown about his views on consolidating con-solidating the three school districts in Summit County, he prefaced his response. "I believe if I'm going to be put in public office, I need to be honest," said Brown. ; North Summit School district, a relatively poor school district, is in the same county as South Summit and Park City school districts, Utah's two wealthiest districts. Brown is a resident of North Summit. Sum-mit. Brown says he doesn't want to inhibit in-hibit Park City's bullish attitude ; toward education, he simply wants ;to see better redistribution of the 'wealth. "I would supnort a mechanism to bring about equity. The inequity was ignored, glossed over in the reports over the summer. I would want to see a mechanism which doesn't violate the voted leeway or the districts' independence. in-dependence. I want to see the base position equalized." A number of factors in the county have conspired to bring about the inequity. in-equity. Most notably, county mineral reserves are mostly located in South Summit school district, creating the deepest education financial pocket in the state. While South Summit has some 11 times North Summit's assessed valuation, according to Brown, Park City is also disproportionately rich. Park City property is quite a bit more valuable than that of North Summit. Brown pointed out that, due Redevelopment Agency tax breaks, Park City already receives a county tax break. Brown suggested the current difference dif-ference is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. "Through history, I'm sure it has varied. But 11 times the income is just too much; we need to find a mechanism to adjust the inequity." Brown also pointed out that the property primarily responsible for the indiscrepency used to be part of North Summit, and the border was Ron Georg moved at one point. He noted that state reapportionment is approaching, ap-proaching, and that reapportioning the districts could be a solution. Brown did not offer any specific solution to the problem, and he did not say he plans to take any specific legislative action, Christmas, and concert, comes but once ' The Park City High School Chorus put on its annual , Christmas dinner show, a fundraiser intended to help the chorus take a trip : to participate in a national ' competition.
