Show Page B4 Thursday, December 1, 1988 Park Record Inexperienced Miners open season Friday by RANDY HANSKAT Record staff writer Gone is the Round Mound of Rebound, Re-bound, Clint Weaver. Gone is the dead eye jumper of Jeff Keye. Gone is the occasional brilliance of Jason Schlenske. Gone is the clutch play of Brett Benson inside. The. first things you notice about this year's Park City High School boys' basketball team are the absences from last year's team which was one of the final eight teams in the 2A tournament. This year only two of the 12 varsity players have any real varsity experience. ex-perience. Only two others were even on last year's varsity. So, the key word becomes experience, ex-perience, or lack thereof, for this year's season. That season begins this Friday night against 3A Uintah in the Uintah Tournament in Vernal. Last year's team went as far as any Park City 2A team has gone, tying ty-ing for seventh in the state. The core of that team is gone: Keye, Benson, and Weaver graduated; Schlenske transfered to 4A Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City. The lack of experience on this year's team makes it hard to get a feel for how they will do when the first jump ball is tossed up. Miner Coach Paul Willard has a good feeling feel-ing about the team. "We are really short on varsity experience. That's one thing which will show up early," he explains. "But that will come and we'll be fine. We are going to be very ' competitive, but we've got to get our feet wet." As he has had in his four previous years at PCHS, Willard got another fine turnout for this year's team. From the original 44 which turned out, academic restrictions and cuts brought the total to a final 29. That is a large enough total to field three teams a varsity, a junior varsity, and a freshman team. Twelve players are on the varsity. The only full time varsity players returning from last year are Larry Winterer, who is likely to be center at 6'6"; and Steve Osguthorpe, who probably will be a forward, having grown since last season to a 6'3" height. Two other players saw limited varsity time: Cameron Hone and Russ Bradford. Coupled with Brandon Bran-don Vierig, a first year varsity player, those five are the seniors of this year's team. Four juniors will have much to do with this year's varsity success or failure. All lettered on the JV last season. That foursome is Corey Francis, Brett Francis, Norman Burns, and Jared Godfrey. Three sophomores round out the varsity. Justin Christensen lettered on the JV last season. Matt Marriott was on last season's freshman team. And Zack Smith transferred to Park City from Pennsylvania. Fourteen players are on the JV team. Scott Glissmeyer and Kevin Kutschkau are the juniors; Travis Axtell, Bill Olsen, and John Sloan the sophomores. The rest of the JV are freshmen: Brad Chamberlain, Mac Davis, Eric Francis, Dan Hudgens, Chad Nelson, Roger Osguthorpe, Robert Simmons, Jamison Vierig, and Chris Winterer. For the varsity, the belief is that the early bird gets the worm, as practice runs from 6 to 7:30 a.m. during school days. Last season there was some griping about the parly practices but it is an effective way to see which players truly want to play and which don't. Getting up at 5:45 on nippy Park City mornings shows dedication. Practice is centering on execution and fundamentals at this point. Since inexperienced players can get flustered by the pressure of varsity crowds and defenses, Willard is trying try-ing to make most of the offensive and defensive responsibilities se- see BBALL on B5 1 ,i . .. .. - , $ I & - t 1 i s - V : ) HOMESTER P.O.
