Show IPMESflDFJ&IL IPMBAOTALPLHIS Park Record Thursday, September 29, 1988 Page B9 Big strike holds big expectations by JENNIFER MADCIC Record staff writer 100 Years Ago A new strike, called the TfwmUt was making headlines. "The strike is a rich one and it is genuine," wrote The Record, adding the seven men working on the strike as well as the Hon. E.P. Ferry were "realizing that they have a bonanza in the Woodside for themselves." Miners had already drilled down 20 feet, where the vein was approximately approx-imately six feet wide "all rich in carbonates car-bonates and chlorides." Apparently, each foot drilled was revealing bigger big-ger and better prospects and every indication so far revealed "permanency." "per-manency." "The excavations some distance above the discovery show the formation forma-tion there to be somewhat broken' up; that the vein pitches in an opposite op-posite direction to the mother vein, which is undoubtedly a true fissue one as it runs east and west with a northwest dip like the great system of parallel veins in the district," reported Record editors. r i The vein was believed to contain about 70 to 600 "odd ounces of silver" to the ton, as well as a "fair percentage of lead." i In other mining news, Ontario Mine workers were busy trying to break through a three-mile drain tunnel. So far, drillers had broken through 100 feet of hard rock and The Record speculated it would be another month before the machinery would be in place and workers would be able to "make rapid headway." Currently, the tunnel was being dug with hand drills. In the Park Float section, Mrs. Sharp, 60, was preparing to marry a Heber City man. Of course, this news was hardly unusual except the man's age 32. Wrote The Record, "a more contented couple would be hard to find." 25 Years Ago A Peoa man got an early start on the 1963 elk season, bagging a trophy 1,000-pound, six-point bull in the Wasatch Mountains. Emel Walsh killed the elk on his second shot, at a range of approximately approx-imately 200 yards. Walsh, who was pictured on the front page of The Record with his trophy, had to use horses to take the animal out to the highway. Walsh had bought an elk license for the past 11 years, and this was his first catch. 10 Years Ago John Singer and his family were in the news once again, this, time for avoiding an outstanding warrant pending for the previous nine months. mon-ths. Living in Marion, Ut., the Singers removed their children from school six years earlier, breaking the state's complusory school at- i s r"rNk f ' ; : r " I - hi Sil' !- le"0 i : . Not only was he awarded Most Valuable Player in both the coed and men's summer leagues, he was also listed as MVP in last Friday night's allstar game. We know how Bandy hates to draw attention to himself, so we thought we'd do him a favor. Congrats, Randy. We think you're swell. Although Judge John Fan-Larson Fan-Larson initially agreed to the home-education home-education program, he placed certain cer-tain criteria which the Singers refused refus-ed to comply. A warrant was thus issued for the arrest of both parents. Refusing arrest, the Singers isolated themselves on their Marion ranch, seeking help from friends and family. John Singer said he would resort to violence if he was approached ap-proached by the law. "We're still here, and this is where we'll stay, since we don't trust anyone yet to let us leave the property," proper-ty," said Vickie, mother of seven children. "I did sneak out once to go to the dentist and for a little ride with a friend, but that's it." . The Singers were receiving much attention from media throughout the country. Recently, the family had been approached by NBC television in New York. Not being allowed on Singer property, NBQhad to conduct the interview over phone.
