'- jT I .' - I " ' ' Big battle is big bust in men's bball by RANDY HANSKAT, Record staff writer This was supposed to be the big week in the men's recreational basketball basket-ball league. Yes, bigger than the Thrilla in Manila. Bigger than Godzilla vs. Bambl. Bigger than the Jolly Green Giant. Bigger than Howard Cosell's mouth. We're talkin' BIG. Yes, it was the meeting of the Ventures and the Wasatch Brewers, the cream of the crop in the men's league which plays every Tuesday night at the Treasure Mountain Middle School. The pair had been tied atop the league standings, both sporting stellar 4-0 records. But like so many Super Bowls, this hyped game was a bust. The Ventures Ven-tures put such a knockout punch on the Brewers that when the Brewers wake up their clothes will be out of style. Without big guns Lou Hudson and Chris Wians, the Brewmeisters were little more than a bubble in their owner's beer mug. The high flying Ventures mauled them 82-51. That March 1 game was the big news of the week on the hardwood, as the season is now over halfway complete. Four teams look to be in the hunt for the elusive league crown: the Ventures, Brewers, Cofer Chiropractic, and Blue Flame Heating. The abusive Ventures look to be the shoe-in for the top spot, though. The Brewmeisters looked like the team the Harlem Globetrotters always beats up on in their games. Without the two leading scorers, Hudson Hud-son and Wians, who were out with knee injuries, the Brewheads were a scary sight. All they could do was watch as the Ventures sprinted up and down the court, scoring at will. Doing much of that scoring for the Ventures was Tom Terrific (how could they lose?). Terrific had a tasty thirty points to lead the rout. The George Steinbrenner of Park City, Greg Schirf, owner and talent scout for the Brewmeisters, saw a good deal of playing time in the contest. con-test. But it was Matt Mapstone who was the sole saving grace for the , Hops. Mapstone ran the team from his guard position, but had no one to go to inside without Hudson and Wians. In other action from March 1, the Zoo Boys of Johnson-Hogle took a close one from the Olympic Hotel 52-49. Travis Poison of the Zoo Boys led all scorers with 23 points. Poison's polished game is the obvious result of a good deal of animal act training. Meanwhile, the Olympians lost another close game. The team has resembled the U.S. bobsled team at Calgary. That natural heating source, Blue Flame, faced off with the stiffs from Valley Monument in another of Tuesday's games. In that game, the Flamers burned true to a 55-50 win. The Stiffs tried to come back in the fourth quarter with three-point shots, hitting four in the quarter, but it wasn't enough. Rick Miller had 18 points for the Flamers. Finally, it was the team you love to remember, the Alamo, against Stein's. The Alamo prevailed in this one 50-47. Sam Eyeam was the top dog for the Team to Remember with 16 points. With a lovely 5-0 record, the Ventures are on top of the dribbling heap in the men's league. Tied for second are the Cofer Spines and the Brewmeisters at 4-1. The Flamers are 4-2. All others are below .500. The Zoo Boys and the Alamo are 2-3, the Stiffs are 1-4. In the basement are the Olympians and Stein's, both bragging about their sporty 1-5 marks. To show the dominance of the Ventures, consider scoring. The Ventures have dumped in 387 points so far this season. That total is over 100 points ahead of the next best team. And, as if that offensive show is not enough, the Ventures have allowed fewer points than anyone else in the league. Here is the lineup for March 15. At 6 p.m. the Alamo and the Zoo Boys will tipoff. Then it will be the Flamers and the Spines at 7 p.m., followed by the Ventures and the Stiffs at 8 p.m. The night's final game pits the Brewmeisters against Stein's at 9 p.m. One of the Ventures lets go a hook shot which Kareem Abdul Ab-dul Jabaar would be proud Randy Hanskat FATHER PATS ANNUAL St. Paddys Day Bash SATURDAY MARCH 12 Traditional Irish Music, Dancing and Song (folk dancing will be taught) ELKS HALL-MAIN STREET 8:00 pm $3.00 per person Refreshments available 649-9676 Everybody Welcome jf ofthe'tS 1 If H E l YljW Ml ,H1IL J iMMMMMaigMgB W L H I Hayes Brothers 1 988 Jeep Cherokee FISH MARKET and OYSTER BAR Paraski Championships at ParkWest RESTAURANT BROASTED CHICKEN ! 12.00 off an 8 Dlece bucket wcoupon 449-466 j Up to $2,000 Consumer Rebate or 6.8 Financing on Select Models HAYES BROTHERS m BUCK JEEP "HAYES BROS BUICK JEEP 2280 SO.
