Show Park Record Thursday, February 4, 1988 Page B7 Do women need different skis than men? by RANDY HANSKAT Record staff writer It'i a question which has been ignored ig-nored for many years. Should women ski on the same equipment that men use? Or are women's bodies different from men when it comes to turning and maneuvering skis? Those and other questions have been posed for the past few years by Jeannie Thoren, advisor to Blizzard Skis. Thoren will be in town Tuesday, Tues-day, Feb. 9 to give a lecture and to allow various local women to demo different skis made specifically for women. According to Bruce (Goose) Juhl, store manager of Cole Sport, the-shop the-shop which is bringing Thoren to Park City, she has done research on the difference between men and women physiologically, and how those differences affect ski performance. perfor-mance. Variables involved, Juhl says, are the location of the waist of the ski, where the bindings should be located, boot stiffness and lean, etc. Thoren originally started her research in Sun Valley, using 20 pairs of demo skis with moveable bindings. She still is based in Sun Valley, but is trying to expand the focus of the problem to other ski towns. To do that, Thoren has been lecturing through the U.S. and Canada. A focal point of her research, Juhl says, is the different ways men and women initiate turns. Men drive their knees to make a turn, whereas women initiate with their hips. Juhl says this phenomenon not only affects af-fects intermediate and beginning women skiers, but World Cup racers, as well. One area of trouble is getting forward for-ward in the boots, Juhl says. Thoren has tried using heel lifts and varying stiffness in the boot to see if that corrects cor-rects the problem. If this is an area which interests you, your chance to talk with Thoren, to even contribute data of your own, will come Feb. 9 at the Snowflower Condominium Conference Con-ference Room. Thoren will lecture from 9 am to 10 or 10:30 on problems with current equipment and solutions solu-tions to those problems. Following that will be a chance for those ladies in attendance to demo some skis designed especially for women. Also on hand will be skis with moveable bindings, so that the' ladies can try a before and after approach. ap-proach. Juhl says this is something which hasn't been done around this area previously. With the number of serious female skiers in town, he thinks the lecture and demo day will be a perfect match with the population. popula-tion. "It's not a thing anybody's making any money on, it is just something that should be dealt with if you want to be a progressive ski town," he says. Anyone interested in the Thoren lecture and demonstation should bring br-ing their own boots and poles to Snowflower by 9 a.m. Tuesday.
