Show Park Record Thursday, January 14. iwa Page A7 Scott Donald- He's single, he's cute...but sorry the number's unlisted by JENNIFER MADGIC Record staff writer About a month ago my friend Scott Donald made me a deal. He said I could wear his nice, winter-white Descente ski jacket, if...one day I would write about him. Eying the delectable coat I said "yes." He was joking, in a manner characteristic of him. I wasn't, as I wrapped myself around the "Stein Eriksen" look alike. Certainly, Cer-tainly, I was getting the better end of the deal. There was , something I liked about the somewhat shy, blond , blue eyed guy I had met a few years back while attending the University Univer-sity of Utah. .' But, just who exactly is this Scott Donald? Aren't profiles only on-ly written on Important people? We have this policy at the Record that profiles are written about important people people who contribute to the well-being of the community and people who, well.. .mirror the feelings we like to see prevalent in our mountain town. .' Life in a resort town can often be grim. During the past three years Scott has lived in town there have been some grim times. Trying to slap together enough money and time to attend at-tend the University of Utah, work, attend to his numerous outdoor hobbies and stay out of trouble, can be tedious by anyone's standards. While many might scoff and say the guy has it easy, others would agree uncertainty can make you feel a little uneasy. Park City is a town where many individuals grow up. Not grow up in the sense of turning from kid to teenager, but growing grow-ing up from teenager to adult a transformation that often times is much more difficult. Scott spent his younger years in the neighboring state of Idaho, before coming to the University of Utah a school he says he chose because of the skiing. ski-ing. His parents sent him and his younger brother Joel to a Catholic high school. Although the family wasn't Catholic, Scott said the experience taught him to appreciate religion and his interest in-terest spurred him to take many religion classes through college, as Scott put it "for fun." His major, however, was in com-ft com-ft mercial recreation. ': . 'l. "Variety has kept Scott busy through the years. After starting off working as a ski instructor for Tom Cammermeyer and the Norwegian School of Nature Life, Scott has filed away experience ex-perience in the retail business, as a bike race organizer, a ranch hand, a bellhop and, currently, cur-rently, as an employee for the new Jeremy Ranch Cross Country Coun-try Ski Area a job he got through his past association with Jack and Lea Turner, who fondly fond-ly refer to Scott as their "son." Jack is the director of skiing for the ski area and is the executive director of the Utah Winter . Games.. Although Scott's real mother and father live in Boise, Idaho, he has a number of surrogate families around town, other than the Turners who he lived with for a year. For the past two years, in true Park City form, Scott has lived in an old miner's shack on Park Avenue. The place is a little scary to say the( least. Scott tells me there are dead cats in the attic. I prefer to have him come over to my place for dinner. Speaking of dinner, Scott hap- pens to be a very good cook. Give him $2 and he'll whip up a storm. He says he doesn't have any particular specialties. Aside from cooking a mean dish of rice, he's great with just about any kind of vegetable, including eggplant which I used to hate. . He says he likes to "eat healthy." Meat is included, but says Scott, has been reduced through the years to encompassing encompass-ing 30 percent of his diet rather than "60 percent." Scott does have a couple of specialties when it comes to sports. Mountain biking and windsurfing during the summer, spring and fall, and skiing during dur-ing the winter, Scott says he likes to categorize his sports according ac-cording to season. In other words, he's not the type to be jumping on his skis if a few flakes fall in October. But . come winter, when it's time to ski, Scott is typically on the mountain at least four days out of the week. It's his philosophy that if he's going to live in such a beautiful place, he's going to darn well take advantage of it. Otherwise, what's the purpose? "I believe in living for today, not worrying about what I'll be doing three years from today," said Scott. "With all the talk of , . nuclear war, the ozone layer, pollution.;.y6u just kind of hope for the best. I don't want to get "With all the talk of nuclear war, the ozone layer, pollution...you just kind of hope for the best. I don't want to get in the habit of saying 111 be happy when.. I try to make the best of things now." Scott Donald in the habit of saying 'I'll be happy when...' I try to make the best of things now." Scott says the recipe for being happy now includes a weekly regime of physical activity, namely, since it is winter, crosscountry cross-country and telemark skiing. "After skiing downhill for 12 years you get spoiled and want to ski only the very best runs. I wanted to try something new j and cross country has' so many variations. Besides, when you're too poor to buy a lift pass. ..It's the poor-man's helicopter skiing!" ski-ing!" Eating vegetables, crosscountry cross-country skiing, living in a old shack.. .do we detect a note of granola-ism? Well, no. Although he does admit to liking the Grateful Dead, Scott says he hasn't "played hacky-sack in years." Plus, Scott doesn't dress like a nature-lover type. GQ , Vi, , , (Gentlemen's Quarterly) is more his style. And there's another thing. ..Scott likes to believe he's a little more serious about life. Living for the moment is one thing, but says Scott, he's not on a "happy-go-lucky program." "This is a great lifestyle but money does provide security," said Scott, pondering. "Sometimes I think maybe I should be down in L.A. trying to get ahead, so I can have several cords of wood in the basement and our or five ski jackets. It's a great lifestyle, but when you get older..." Scott shakes his head. "I don't want to be doing what I'm doing now when I'm in my thirties. A little security would be nice." Security, growing old, getting a real job...? Such serious talk for someone who lives to ski through knee-deep powder and ride his bike along the ridgelines bordering town. Is this change similar to the changes many of us have gone through "growing up" in Park City? Could it be there are more important things aside from having fun, visiting the bars and waxing your skis? Is there a chance for other "ski bum" types living in town? Scott will tell you there is. But of course, all of this doesn't mean you have to, egads, move to Los Angeles to get the job done. Scott believes Park City is capable of doing the job just fine... even if he has to find a "real" job in Salt Lake City. The non-materialistic, sensitive sen-sitive nature of Scott is something hard to find these days. While the exterior may portray an individual seemingly indifferent to the world around him, the inside reveals a very special and caring person. Good looks, good cook, sensitive, sen-sitive, enjoys the outdoors.. out-doors.. .Wow! Sorry ladies we can't list his phone number. We normally run photos with our weekly Park City Profile columns, but unfortunately, the writer photographer of the week managed to take a whole roll of blank film. The film is currently being stored in our vault until the day Scott becomes famous and we can make some money off the negs.
