' . . .- The draisienne was the first machine that looked l like a bike. It was invented about 1816 by a German forest ranger named Baron Karl von Drais. It was made of wood. He used it to roll out on patrol. He could stay seated while he coasted between steps. Pedals were added in the 1860s with the invention of a bike called the velocipede. This was also called a boneshaker. At first, bikes were imported from England. They were banned from the streets of some cities. They frightened the horses and walkers. In 1883, the kangaroo, an ordinary with sprockets and chains, was invented. The front wheel was smaller. Bikes became more stable and easier to ride. Bicycling is popular sport here in Park City, but how many people knew how long it had been around? Notice that the latest model, 1889, looks a good bit like a mountain moun-tain bike. In the late 1870s, the high-wheel bike called an "ordinary" was imported from England. It was a very popular bicycle, but it was very hard to ride. It had a big 50-to 50-to 62-inch front wheel. The pedal was attached to the hub. The bigger the wheel the farther you could go with each turn of the pedal. By 1893, air-filled tires made riding much more comfortable. Bikes became much lighter in weight. The tandem or two-seater bike was very popular. The women sat in the front and men in the back. Many couples courted on bikes. Meet Dennis McCoy Dennis McCoy is probably the best BMX freestyle rider in the United States. He calls himself "the real McCoy." He was voted this year's Freestyler of the Year by readers of Super BMX magazine. Dennis gets up in the afternoon and rides on his ramps for a few hours. At about 10 p.m., he and his partner go to a parking lot to practice ground tricks. He gets home about 3 a.m.! He was ranked No. 1 in 1986 and is the current leader for the 1987 American Freestyle Association's Overall and Flatland pro titles. In 1889, this roadster was one of the first of the modern bikes to be made in America. The diamond- shaped steel frame, the rear wheel chain and sprocket drive are like those on the bikes we ride today. helmet mouth guard elbow pads padded nylon pants Dennis, age 20, is from Kansas City, Mo.
