BIKE & TIIEEEEEEE. LA LA LA LA. Such was the chant emanating from the hills and streets of Park City Ci-ty Saturday as the Utah State Bike & Tie Championships rolled by. Sprockets were whirring, legs were churning, and sweat was beading as contestants negotiated the 13 mile course, alternating between foot and pedal. According to Fred Thaller, director direc-tor of the Bike & Tie Association, 67 people partook in the race. The course started at the Carl Winters Middle School at the Autumn " Festival, rolled up Park Avenue and Plenty of riders foam through Tour De Suds The riders were all foaming at the mouth. What? Is this a story of rabies hitting hit-ting the moutain bike circuit? No, simply a brief tale about Sunday's Tour De Suds mountain bike race. The race began at the Rotary Park, progressed up Marsac Avenue and into Ontario Canyon. From there it got semi-serious (for a bunch of beer-guzzling bikers) and made its way up and over Guardsman's Guard-sman's Pass, winding up at Bonanza Flats. Next it was on to the slopes coursing down Last Chance and Rosebud ski runs at the Deer Valley Resort. Back to civilization civiliza-tion on Deer Valley Drive and into So'amere, then up onto the ridge between bet-ween Sola mere and Prospector Square and over to the dump. After riding around in the scrub, the pack came back to Park City through Prospector Pro-spector Square, ending up back at Autumn Fest. Thaller said seven miles of the course, originally planned to cover 20 miles, were eliminatafrtor safety v,n producing. Following the race was relief for those dry mouths a beer bash at the finish area. Chris Farrell of Jan's, sponsor of the race, said 75 riders took part in the sudsiness. And depending on the amount of beer consumed before the race, Farrell said, "Some may still be finishing even as we speak." Turning in the top time of the race was Martin Stanger of Salt Lake with a time of approximately 50 minutes.
