A total of 20 teams contested this year's tourney, most chocked full of long ball crushers. Trying to measure up to those monsters of the diamond were three local teams. Genesis and Royal Seafood kept their perennial titles for the tourney. But four-time consecutive league champion Jan's could not get sponsored for the tournament. It is the first time in recent memory that the league champion team was not sponsored in the Labor Day Tourney. The team still wanted to play, picking up a new enthusiastic sponsor, Leroy Lee. Thus, Jan's became Leroy's Unit for the tournament. Royal Seafood didn't have a good tournament. They were hook-lined-and-sinkered out in two quick games. Genesis and Leroy's Unit, however, did quite well, ending the tournament tied for fifth. Both teams had 3-2 records against the stiff competition. It was evident that the teams don't play many tournaments, as batting lulls caused untimely losses, something you can't survive with in tournament play. The two local powers whipped up on the opposition Saturday, both mercy-ing mercy-ing their opposition to go into Sunday's rounds. The batting scene was ugly in each team's opening Sunday game. Batting was anemic for both squads which soon found themselves in the loser's bracket, an ignominous designation. Both teams then had to play three more games that day, and each lost its " final shot after the day's brilliant sun was long gone. Winning the tournament was the Newcrete team out of Salt Lake. Newcrete beat Bud Light twice in the finals to take the top prize. Newcrete lost its third game on Sunday, but came back from the loser's bracket, a not often performed feat. The real losers of the tournament, however, were the many cars which were parked beyond the Orange Monster and down the left field foul line. They received numerous bombs on windshield and hood from the excessive ball crushing which was occurring on the diamond. Good aim, guys !
