Show Page A4 Thursday, April 23, 1987 Park Record City Mews Police Report Car hits telephone pole Stop careless smoking AGENDA Power went out and a local restaurant was evacuated Monday evening when a car struck a Utah Power & Light pole in front of Utah Coal and Lumber at the bottom of Main Street. Robert L. Greene, who resides at the Iron Horse Condominiums, hit the pole about 9 p.m. April 20, breaking break-ing it in three places. The Park City Fire Department responded with police to the accident, and helped evacuate the restaurant due to the downed lines. The road was also closed for a time. Greene was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was arraigned in 5th Circuit Court April 22. Power was out in some places for more than five hours, as were some telephone lines. In other police reports, an incident of theft was reported March 16 by Jackie Powell who said the wheel covers had been stolen from a 1986 Nissan while it was parked at the Treasure Mountain Inn at 250 Park Ave. The covers were valued at $272. And a case of criminal mischief was reported March 21 after two tires on a 1979 Subaru were slashed while it was parked at the Texaco on Park Avenue. Loss was estimated at $60. Submitted by the Park City Fire Service District One of the most common causes of deaths in home fires is careless smoking. It has been estimated that 35 percent per-cent of all home fire deaths (about 1,500 a year) and 17 percent of all home fire injuries are caused by cigarette fires. More than $300 million in property is lost in these fires. The Park City Fire Service District recommends that special precautions be taken to avoid a cigarette fire: a -Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. -Do not place ashtrays on the arms of furniture. -More cigarette fires involve dropping drop-ping a hot cigarette on beds or upholstered furniture or clothing. A lit cigarette can smolder for 20 to 30 minutes before igniting anything. Check furniture before going to bed. Never smoke in bed or while reclining reclin-ing in upholstered furniture. -Make sure ashes are completely cold before emptying them. Try wetting wet-ting ashtray contents before throwing throw-ing them in the trash. Install extra smoke detectors in smokers' bedrooms and other areas they spend time in. -The combination of smoking and drinking alcohol can be fatal. Keep an eye on those in that condition. After weeks of dialogue among representives of the town's golfing seniors, members of the city council, and city course golf pro Doug Vilven, an agreement agree-ment was reached to offer resident seniors a reduced golf pass. Vilven had argued with the increased senior trade from Arizona in the summer sum-mer it would be unfair to offer a discounted pass to resident seniors and not to all seniors. He went so far as to suggest that giving free passes would be less confusing than discounted ones. An indignant Burnis Watts, a longtime resident and senior citizen, asked the council and Vilven, "Where did you ever get the idea the seniors of this town wanted charity? You contribute money to the teen center because you think it has socially redeeming value. We want you to offer seniors a reduced golf pass because there is socially redeeming value in this group of citizens too." Since the golf course had been purchased by the city with some federal monies, it was initially thought that to offer a discounted pass would be a form of discrimination not allowed. City Attorney James Carter determined that was not the case. At last count it appeared seniors who live fulltime in Park City will be able soon to purchase a full privilege season pass, normally $280, for about half price. Those seniors interested in such a purchase can contact Mayor Hal Taylor at the city offices at the Marsac building. Public invited to attend This week city council members are expected to set final plans into motion for various projects within the Redevelopment District. Recently the council heard an enthusiastic proposal from new planning director, Myles Rademan, on some landscaping and signage improvements he saw as vital to the RDA. The work session will be a joint meeting with members of the planning and historic district commissions also on hand to discuss goals and incentives for the downtown area. The public is invited to attend the meeting which is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Utah Crime Solvers requests information in-formation to the following crime: A gunman forced his way into the Commercial Security Bank in Sugarhouse in Salt Lake City on Feb. 24 at 8:35 a.m. An employee of the bank was outside out-side shoveling snow when a man armed with a hand gun forced the employee into the bank.
