Prevent fire from ruining your Christmas Heidi West by HEIDI WEST Record staff writer In 30 seconds, the blaze which had barely nipped the Christmas tree's needles enveloped its entire bough. The gifts, the lights, the neatly-hanging neatly-hanging decorations were vaporized in a vivid demonstration by the Park City Fire Service District of the hazard the combination of dry vegetation and electricity can create. . Fire Marshall Sam Coleman ar- ranged the display to dramatize the danger and emphasize ways to prevent pre-vent it. First, he suggests looking for lights and extension cords which display a red "UL" tag. The UL stands for Underwriter Labs which is a testing agency for several types of electrical elec-trical equipment. . Follow the manufacturer's instructions instruc-tions on extension cords or ..Christmas light sets. , , Use extension cords which are at least as thick and preferably thicker than the light set cord. Test the cord by gripping it near the plug. If the extension cord is warm, it is not thick enough. Unplug the lights if you leave the house or when you go to bed. Look for combustable material and make sure lights and cords are as far away from it as possible. Watch kids and pets to make sure they do not move cords or combustk, ble material into contact with each other. Buy a tree which is as green and fresh as possible. Keep the tree fresh by buying a stand which holds water and adding two or more quarts of water a day to keep the stand full. . The district has been averaging three Christmas-tree-related fires over the last several years. If you follow these suggestions, it will help insure your .tree is not one of them this season.;;! ii;,'; '". -ui QWE IT A Center is now open J ""44 v. '. . ) v&V ' ' 1 at the base of the xdSdTN. J.
