In the top of the fourth inning, after the Bums knocked Doc's starting star-ting pitcher Marco Peretti from the mound with six runs, Cummings huddled his team together for a conference. con-ference. "This is it. I'll leave it up to you ! j vs. We have a good lead and the l;trters are playing well. Do you vant to stick with them the rest of ;ne way? Or should we substitute?" he asked them. A sacrifice fly by Ned Lamphier narrowed the gap to 11-9. Jesse Schaub then walked to bring br-ing the winning run in Rodriguez to the plate. Rodriguez looked at a couple of outside pitches and fouled one off. He then lofted a towering drive, that just floated and kept floating over the 296-foot sign in centerf ield for the game winning home run. The Bums struck first with four runs in the first inning. Don Bacco singled and was driven in by Paul Lamphier's base hit. Lamphier scored on a single by John Whiteley and the speedy Steve Simchen cleared the bases with a triple. Doc's was held to one hit in two innings in-nings by Rick Sharp, but they solved the Sharp puzzle in the third inning with six hits and five runs after two outs. Ron Shultz doubled between a ground out and a fly out and was bought home on a double by Tim Sharp. DeNunzio singled Sharp to third and then both runners scored on a home run by Ned Lamphier. Rodriguez, however, was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double to end the inning. The Bums came right back in the top of the fourth with six runs keyed by a two-runs-batted-in home run by Miller and a two RBI double by Rod Dedrick. But with one out, Doc's bought in Greg Winn, their ace reliever, and he put out the rally by inducing Paul Lamphier to ground out and John Winston to fly out The Bums added one more run to their total in the fifth inning on a home run by Simchen. Do You Have Your Discount Card? , 't A Y O G U R T : C A F T by JIMSMEDLEY Record staff writer Playing against Jans is just like playing with a time bomb. You know it's going to explode, you just don't know when. Against Utah Coal & Lumber in the men's league semifinals Aug. 6, the explosion was set for the sixth inning in-ning when Jans sent 10 men to the plate and pounded out seven hits and seven runs to bury the challengers 14-8. The win enables Jans to defend their title against a familiar face Doc's. This is the third consecutive con-secutive year Jans will square off against Doc's for the title and if Jans wins it will be their fourth consecutive con-secutive championship. o Utah Coal & Lumber started off t hot against the champs with a five- run first inning. Jeff Samples and Tony Cash hit consecutive singles z and then Brook Barrett's one-bagger drove them in. After a fielder's choice Kevin James connected with a single and Jerry Johnson got a base hit to drive in two more runs. Steve Musco drove in the final run of the inning with a single. But after that five-run outburst the Utah Coal team lost their lumber for four innings. They got a run in the sixth inning when James was safe on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on Musco's sacrifice fly. Utah Coal & Lumber added two more in the seventh on a walk to Lee Cruzan and singles by Samples and Cash. The Jans time bomb started ticking tick-ing in the first inning. Val Provencio got things going with a single. Randy Hanskat followed with another single and both runners scored on Gordy Buynak's base hit. It kept ticking in the second when Brad Bean doubled and scored one out later on Doug Whitney's single. Rugby clubs The Park City Rugby Club split up into two groups last weekend to participate par-ticipate in the Vail 7-Side Invitational Invita-tional Tournament, and judging from the results, the team's forte may be in 7-side play. One team, called ParkWest, finished second with a 7-1 record and the other, called Park City, finished third witth a 5-2 mark. Vail won its own tournament with a 8-0 record. In the semifinal game, ParkWest lost, 34-24, to Vail. If they could have gotten by Vail it would have set up a Park City-ParkWest final. But Hanskat's hit scored the fleet-footed Provencio and Robin Svoboda single home Hanskat. Jans was quiet in the fourth inning, inn-ing, but ticked away for two more runs in the fifth inning. How? Provencio and Hanskat slapped singles, Buynak hit a sacrifice fly and then Svoboda brought Hanskat home. Provencio and Hanskat were pests to Utah Coal & Lumber all evening. Both had four hits and scored four runs each. Provencio's were all singles. Hanskat threw a double in for a little variety and also had two runs-batted-in. The bomb finally went off in the sixth inning when Kurt Lindeman singled and Whitney doubled him home. Tim Lee singled home do well in 7s tourney "We trained hard for two weeks to prepare for the tournament and both sides played the best rugby they have played all year," spokesman Dann Larsen said. "The reason we were invited to Vail is that we played them so well in the Ski Town Tournament Tourna-ment last month." - In 7s play the playing time is reduced to 15 minutes and of the seven players, four are backs and a three people form the scrum.
