Harris ran a strong race, completing com-pleting the first lap of 20 in 55 seconds. Her final lap was timed at 58 seconds, so the Park City resident kept her torrid pace going throughout the race. Harris led at the end of every lap and at the finish line, a feat no Wheat Thins racer has ever accomplished. She was simply too much for the other 14 women cyclists to contend with and there were some top U.S. cyclists in her division. Mindy Mayfield, who finished second se-cond in the individual pursuit for the United States at the recent Goodwill Games in Moscow, was there chasing chas-ing Harris. Betsy Davis, two-time national Criterium champion, eight-year member of the U.S. National team and winner of the 1985 Wheat Thins Mayor's Cup Series, was also chasing chas-ing Harris to no avail. "I caught Madonna after three laps and then she just pulled away. I was just trying to stay with her and I couldn't," Davis said. The altitude bothered Davis, who could be seen coughing for several minutes after the race. She said she was burning from her chest up during dur-ing the final few laps. But as hot as things were for Davis they were even hotter for Harris, who just burned up and down the course. After eight laps, when she opened a 23 second lead, it was Harris Har-ris for first place and the rest of the pack for second. With three laps to go she had a 40 second lead and the race sponsors taped two, $50 bills o the finish line and told her that if she The Golf Park GOLF SCHOOL 20 hours of individualized instruction based on (a.m. OR p.m. sessions Mon. - Fri.) "It was amusing," Madonna said of the $100 bonus for lapping the field. "The race was just too short to lap the field. I hadn't planned on going go-ing to the front so soon, but it was there, so I took it. "The home crowd really helped me too. They gave me the energy to keep going," she added. Indeed it was a Madonna crowd. The cheers could be heard at the bottom bot-tom of Main Street as she turned the corner and they rolled along with her as she come up the hill. The course began in front of the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street and continued south until reaching the Post Office. Racers then turned east through a parking lot and then north on Swede Alley. When they reached Heber Avenue they turned west and then south again on Main Street. The course was 200 yards short of being one-half mile. Davis finished third. Harris Har-ris also earned $1,200 for her almost 20 minutes work. She won the $400 first-place prize money and another $800 in primes money. Primes are gived to the leader of every lap, in this race most of the laps featured two primes on the front straightaway and on the rear straightaway. The men's pro 1 and 2 class, a 40-lap event, was won by a team effort ef-fort of three cyclists racing for the Alpha Romeo team. Matt Eaton took first place with Jeff Rutter second and Dan Freiner third. Eaton credited the Alfa Romeo team's and his individual win to the efforts of Franger, who led in the earlier part of the race. "It is almost impossible to win one of these and not be on a team. And today our game plan worked to perfection," said Rutter. "Dan seemed to have everything under control whether he was in front or in the pack." Franger took the early lead and pushed the tempo. His teammates paced themselves in the pack until the 13th lap, when they moved to the front. "Usually early in the race everyone is fresh. It takes a few laps before they feel the drag of the hill," Rutter added. Salt Lake City's Steve Johnson had just enough strength left when he needed it to win the combined seniors' 3 and junior divisions. Johnson, who was the top veteran in the Washington Trust races in Spokane, Wash., earlier this month went wheel to wheel with Salt Lake City's Kevin Zeigle until the last lap. "When we got to the Post Office he (Johnson) just pulled away from me and I couldn't catch him," Ziegle said. Johnson completed the 20-lap race in 24:07.17. Zeigle was second, 57.34 seconds behind the leader. Nate Seidner, North Ogden, was third, 1:07.65 behind and Tom Noaker, Oakley, was fourth at 1:22.38 behind the leader. your goals and needs (Limited Enrollment) P.O.
