He has made a career of playing play-ing tennis and skiing while living in some of the nicest places in the United States. Nice work, if you can get it. Carroll is the tennis teaching professional pro-fessional at the Prospector Athletic Club. To him, it's just another tough job. When you ask the 37-year-old where he is from, you get any number of answers. If you dig a little you'll find he was born in New York and grew up in Florida. "When I was about 22 I moved to California," Carroll says, not quite remembering the exact date. "Moving "Mov-ing to California is what everybody back East wants to do, at least until they get there." Carroll landed in Lake Tahoe where he got into the ski business and learned to be a teacher. In the summers he worked at the Tahoe Racquet Club. He has had a tan ever since. Later in Tahoe he worked at the Incline Racquet Club where he learned to teach tennis from pros Bill and Kevin Fallon. The next season he got a job teaching tennis at the Carnelian Bay Club. "The Fallons were real nice to me," Carroll said. "They saw me working in the restaurant at the club and they knew I was interested in teaching. They let me work with the kids through the summer and I really real-ly enjoyed that." Seven years in Tahoe was enough for Carroll and he moved to Palm Springs, Calif. "Palm Springs was a lot different back then," explained Carroll. "In the summers the whole area would just about close down. But now there is enough business to keep the area open year-round. It is a strange place to live. I was told once that even the children make $50,000 a year." In Palm Springs he worked for three years at the Palm Desert Country Club with three-time Wimbledon champion Alice Marble. "Working with her was great, she used to tell a lot of great stories," Carroll said. "I hadn't really heard of her before I met her, but I used to 8 0 RESTAURANT Main Street 643-8051 E-10 WEEKDAYS G-ilWIIftNS2 Car Trouble? We'll fix it on the double! Carroll had grown up in the building business, and he decided about four years ago that maybe he should give the business a try. "I found I could make a lot more money in the building business, but the business has fallen on bad times lately," Carroll said. After not hitting a tennis ball for three years, Carroll got out of the building business. He found the personal per-sonal gratification was "absolutely zero." "We had taken a vacation to Park City about eight years ago and we had wanted to move here ever since," Carroll said. "For one reason or another we were never able to move, but last year we did it. I didn't have a job or anything." On Labor Day, 1985, the Carrolls arrived in the area. He worked as a ski instructor last winter at ParkWest Ski Area, and in February he signed a contract to teach at the Prospector Athletic Club. "I think I'm in Park City to stay, but you'd better not print that because I might scare other people out of town," Carroll joked. "I think Park City is a wonderful town, especially this time of year when the weather is so nice." Carroll plans a Lipton Tennis Tourney sometime this summer and a mixed doubles tournament and barbecue in mid-June. He will also be holding a Ladies Day on Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. beginning June 6; businessmen's tennis sessions on Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. beginning begin-ning June 9; and a Junior Program on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. beginning June 9. The Junior Program is for boys and girls ages 9 to 15. "I really have high hopes for the Junior Program. I really enjoy teaching kids," Carroll said. "All the tournaments and programs are open to the public, I hope we can get a lot of interest. It's tougher to get people on the tennis courts nowadays. It used to be that the courts were packed with people, but it seems now you almost have to drag people onto the courts." Carroll also plans to open a small tennis business in conjunction with Cole Sport Ltd. He will sell tennis hardware and string racquets. He will, as always, work hard at his new job, but the jobs he has had are the kind it's not too tough to work hard at.
