Volleyball team wins region crown photo by John Kinch by John Kinch The Park City Miners volleyball team buried the Miners of Tintic last Thursday Thurs-day 15-2, 15-10, to win the Region 11 championship and boost their already impressive impres-sive record to 11-2. Park City's next opponent will be Parowan, the fifth place team in Region 12, in the first round of the state championship tournament. That game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday at North Sevier High School in Salina. If the Miners, who are seeded first in Region 11, win that game they will play again Friday at 9 p.m. against the winner of the North Sevier-Whitehorse game. The state championship champion-ship game will be played on Saturday at 4 p.m. There are 16 teams in the tournament from Regions 11, 12 and 13. Six of the teams are from Region 11, including includ-ing Park City, Tintic, St. Joseph, North Summit, South Summit, and North Rich. Salina is only 17 miles from Richfield, where the football team will be playing Kanab. This is convenient for Park City fans who want to attend both events. In the game against Tintic last Thursday, Park City dominated the other Miners. In the first game, Tintic scored the first two points of the game, but Park City went on to score the next 15 to win the game. The second game was closer, but Park City was still in control. Sophomore Nicki Koch served the final two points of the game, giving the Miners a 15-10 win. Koch and junior Kelly Bolton were outstanding in both games, with Bolton setting Koch and Koch 5 ; :! ana AoosnsCnnn 2) CoI2)o 30 day; s to D years Choose the rate and tTHM that suits you! In other Region 11 games last week St. Joseph defeated de-feated North Summit in the battle for third and fourth places. South Summit finished fin-ished fifth and North Rich sixth. Park City's opponent for the region championship was determined by a playoff earlier in the week between Tintic and St. Joseph. Even with the Miners' convincing victory over Tintic, Tin-tic, Coach Kari Culp is concerned with the upcoming upcom-ing state tournament. "Tintic upset St. Joseph. St. Joseph would have been a stronger opponent. Tintic was an easy game, especially especial-ly with the girls playing so well. The competition will be tougher in the state tournament tourna-ment and as we advance it will become even tougher," Culp said. In the tournament Coach Culp expects to face some aggressive offensive teams from the southern regions of the state. "We are going to have to work on our defense, specifically specifi-cally blocking spikes against these teams. Like us, they are more offensively oriented or-iented than the teams we have played in the past,"i said Culp. Park City's success so far is attributable to the players' natural ability, according to Culp. Another reason is the volunteer help of Park City resident Harold Buckner. Although he calls himself a "teacher" of volleyball, with his credentials he could be a professor. Buckner is the director of the National Volleyball Championships, the vice-president of the U.S. Volleyball Association, the director of the National Co-Ed Volleyball Championships, Champion-ships, and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee for women's volleyball. He has played, coached, and taught volleyball for 30 years and during that time he has seen some exceptional volleyball players. He said that the Park City players compare favorably to them. "I teach the girls how to play volleyball," Buckner said, "and I tell you they are getting awfully good. I'll tell you something else. On this team you are looking at six to seven potential major scholarship winners, and this is a young team. In a year or two nobody is going to be able to touch us." High Rollers give one away Some games you win, some games you lose, and some games you give away. The Park City High Rollers Major Division team gave one away Saturday as only seven players showed up for a scheduled game against United. The lack of players forced Park City to forfeit. "It just seemed like it was the weekend where everybody was out of town or had something or other to do," High Roller fullback Mike Walker said later. "When the snow starts falling, people start losing interest." The Major Division team wasn't the only one suffering from a shortage of players. The Park City Reserve Division team, also scheduled to play United, was forced to play the whole game one man short. In that game, Park City jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but lost what Walker called a "tear-jerker," "tear-jerker," 3-2. , Scoring the goals for Park City were forwards Brad Ryan and Paul Carpenter. Helping to set up a number of scoring opportunities was Danish exchange student Niels Bau-Madsen. "He playea a real strong game in the middle," said Walker. "He has the knack of knowing where to go with the ball ... He was able to put the ball where they (the forwards) for-wards) had the angle." Anchoring the fullback line was John Demkowicz, who played "one of his better games," according to Walker. This weekend's schedule calls for both the Major and Reserve Division teams to face Noordica at Rosewood Park Saturday. Those games are set to begin at 1:30 (Reserve) and 3:30 (Major).
