She was a stranger to me, but obviously was visiting visit-ing in my "little piece of heaven". I felt a shock of pain as I notice the bunch of wild-flowers wild-flowers in her hand. As she came near, I spoke as gently as I could. "Do you know what you have there?" "I haven't the faintest," she replied. "This tall blue one is a Penstemon, the yellow five-petaled five-petaled one is called Cinque-foil, Cinque-foil, the daisy-like yellow one is Golden-eye, this elegant white one is an unusually large native Columbine, the bright pink is a Fremont Geranium and this tall reddish one is Rose Crown. These last two bloom in all shades from white to pink to deep magenta." I was trying to hide the distress I felt at such a waste, and yet I was aware that I would like to be the grandmother who received such a lovely bouquet from my grandchildren. She sensed my concern and asked if she had been wrong in picking them. Still gentle, I answered, "Each one of these blossoms would seed several dozen plants next year and you will discover that they will all die before you can get them to water. "How come you know all their names? she queried. "It's been one of my favorite hobbies for many years." I tried to recall which July it was that captured my interest enough to seek out the names of these spectacular spectacu-lar flowers which make such a splash of vibrant color on every mountain side and mountain meadow from early ear-ly June until late August. If we missed their show at a lower elevation we would hike up higher and the show played all over again. We had taken our children camping in the high Uinta mountains of Utah. Hiking is such a delightful adventure and we started to count the different kinds of flowers. We soon learned that certain ones grow by streams and in boes, different ones grow on 1 are a few of the select properties offered through Gump and Ayers. We hunt pink Elephant Head, Red Monkey Flower, White Parrot's Beak and Creamy Cow Parsnip. The real reward of making friends with all the flowers is the fun of gathering their seeds in late summer and fall. We take only a couple of seed pods from a plant so they can reseed themselves for next July. On the last two days before the full moon in September we " take- our paper bags labeled Lupine, Indian Paintbrush, Geranium, Gerani-um, Fireweed, Aster, Columbine, Colum-bine, Wild Hollyhocks, Scarlet Scar-let Gilia and Mountain Sunflowers Sun-flowers and scatter our collected seeds around our cabin located high in Utah's Wasatch Mountains. The long winter covers everything with eight to ten feet of snow. When it finally melts away in June, the tiny seedlings pop up through the thick carpet of aspen leaves which covers every inch of the grounds. The victory of a few tiny plants of each species, which have survived the cold and snow, now enter this world to reward anyone who takes time to notice. It is as exciting as any experience I know. Now my "little piece of heaven" blooms from the receding edge of the melting snow in June until the first snowfall in late September. Each year we add new species from new places and each year they multiply and color our hillside alpine garden bringing us surprise, joy and satisfaction. Perhaps Per-haps I shouldn't have spoken to my young visitor, but after I introduced her to the many colorful flower friends who thrive in my "little piece of heaven" she vowed, "I'll never pick another wildflower" wildflow-er" and thanked me with a smile.
